BJ'S BLOG 01/24/13 "One Mistake"

Yesterday on the show, we talked about a teacher who is getting fired over a joke she pulled with her students…and the joke was the students’ idea!

Melissa Cairns is a middle school math teacher has been fired after posting a picture of a few of her students with duct tape over the mouths and writing Finally found a way to get them to be quiet!!!" It was the students’ idea and they placed the duct tape over their own mouths.

She was fired after a fellow teacher discovered the picture and reported her.

Cairns did say posting the picture was a mistake but also said, "Do I feel that this one, stupid mistake should cost me the last 10 years of all the good I've done? Absolutely not.”

What has happened to society? Why is it that people are expected to have 100% success, if not, they’re fired? There is no room for error and unfortunately good people are getting thrown out for things that are harmless.

Cairns sounded like a cool enough teacher where the kids felt comfortable enough around her to make jokes with her, so why can’t they just accept that she admits to making a mistake and move on.

If the kids were forced to do something they didn’t want to do that is a different story, or if she has been in trouble before but this was not the case. I hope that she sues the school district and gets a pile of cash because this is just ridiculous.

Teacher duck tape
I have a hard time understanding the thinking of people who abuse power to stroke their own ego and to prove their superiority. In this case, her firing is absolutely out of balance with the act itself, especially when the kids did it to themselves. I would assume the underlying reason may be because of sue happy parents, but I think we, as a society, should step back and examine what affect this over protection of kids is doing to their ability to be productive when they become adults. Will they expect this kind of protection as an adult in the work force during our next economic down turn? I say look up your parents brats, because I don't want to have to support your asses.

Lawsuits are not the answer
A teacher should definitely have better judgement, but I don't think she should have been fired. We all make mistakes in our lives and it's not fair that she wasn't given a chance to learn from it and move on. But BJ c'mon, you ask what's wrong with society, and you end your blog in a classic American way: sue them! That's probably why she got fired in the first place, the school didn't want to get sued by the parents, and that fear stems from the fact that everyone's answer these days is Sue them!

Good teacher
sounds like the kids knew they needed a way to stay on task and be quiet. Sounds like the teacher made a good choice and let them recognize how they could fix it. good teacher need more of them around instead of these super liberal sissy shits we have these days.
