Last Friday during Headlines and Sports, Steve reported on the latest
New Orleans Saints head Coach Sean Payton received a one-year ban while ex-Saints coach Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely by the league after audio of Gregg surfaced of him urging his team to seriously injury the important players on the opposing team.
The audio recordings were made by a filmmaker who followed the Saints last season as part of a documentary on football in the U.S.
Here is the audio of what Gregg said:
Many people lamented the new rules set in this year, but now we are seeing that if those rules were not put in place then these guys would be out there killing each other.
I’m all about contact which is what people love about sports like hockey, football, and even soccer but we don’t want to see our favorite guys go out and get injured so badly they can’t ever play again.
I’d like to think that there are more sports fans like myself that wants to see games that are won by skill, not by the players who needlessly pound on the head of another player.
If the point of football is who can injure the star players, then let’s change the X’s and O’s to black and blues.
