BJ'S BLOG 06/20/14 "Redskins' Trademark Revoked"

The U.S. Patent Office has declared the “Redskins” name to be disparaging of Native Americans, following a country-wide campaign to change the name. As a result, the team’s logo and branding trademarks are going to be canceled.

Personally, I can’t believe it’s taken this long. It’s time to start taking a look at other teams who have lived in a comfort zone of subtle racism. Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Indians, I’m looking in your direction. Take a look at the Chief Wahoo character used by the Indians...and then imagine if he was a caricature of a black or Hispanic person. Things start getting uncomfortable pretty quickly, don’t they?

(Don’t even get me started on the Fightin’ Irish.)

The Redskins owner is unhappy with this ruling, but he probably won’t mind the massive influx of cash that’s sure to follow a re-branding and re-merchandising of the team.

Where do you stand on this debate, gang?

Ever notice how, in general, arguments supporting a change are well-constructed and rational, and ar
Funny how that works. Granted, there's probably a huge chunk of people who are indifferent as well.

Redskins...
I honestly really like the idea of changing the mascot to a potato. I don't care about the sport at all, but I would become a fan if my team were the Redskin Potatoes!

Who cares
Th same people that cry about the n word run around blasting that word out of their stereo. No credibility. The people complaining about redskins are irrelevant. It is the veteran Navajo coders from WW2 proudly showing off their Washington Redskins jackets that matter. They are most likely to have suffered from racial problems, but they are proud of the team showing respect for them.

vagina
That's what you are bj. A little vagina. As a native american the word redskin does not offend me in the least. What offends me is seeing other people that are not native Americans crying about how offensive the word is. Acting as if they have to be outraged for me. As if I am incapable of being outraged myself. You are a true feminized "man". You should be ashamed of yourself. Thank god I do not listen to your 4 hour commercial every day anymore. You and people like you are what is wrong with not only this country but the world as well.

While I agree in principle with the 'vagina' post...
i must disagree in fact with the idea of someone of another culture and race attempting to be socially conscious of racial slurs. I would be more inclined to agree with you if you had talked about the fact that the u.s. gov't has for years slaughtered, sidelined, and disenfranchised the same group of people that they have never dealt with honestly. Sadly it's the u.s. patent office that's attempting to patch a band-aid over numerous bullet wounds the gov't themselves have inflicted, or helped to inflict.

RE: vagina
Perhaps the fact that you don't listen to the show is the reason you misunderstood the topic. I was commenting on the commercial that was done by other native Americans about the term "Redskins." They disagree with you, but that doesn't invalidate your own opinion on the subject. It also doesn't mitigate the illogic of the situation, either. My comments are based on the hypocrisy of this country when it comes to some teams being forced to change their name, as well as others being vilified for using certain words that have been deemed inappropriate depending on your ethnicity. I'll tell you what's wrong with this world... name calling anyone who's hearts & minds are in the right place. Thanks for listening when you used to, I appreciate it. -BJ
