BJ'S BLOG 06/21/13 "Trolls"

Yesterday on the show, we talked about the newest changes Microsoft has made for their upcoming console, the Xbox One.

Originally it was announced that the new system would have to be connected to the internet at all times even if you’re playing in single player offline or not using it at all. They also said that you would not be able to lend, sell, or rent games.

After being lambasted on the internet and even made fun of by Sony in a video that went viral, they have decided to change all that.

Here is the statement from Microsoft:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console — there will be no regional restrictions.

The thing that bothers me is that even though the public spoke and Microsoft listened, there are many people out there who are still mad at them! This console hasn’t even been released yet and no one has had to pay for anything!

I believe this behavior has to do with the entitlement generation we live in and sadly I see a vast amount of it in the geek community.

We all have the right to complain about what why whine and bitch after someone listens and then gives you what you were asking for?

People really need to stop being trolls about this and if you’re still complaining, it’s probably because you’re miserable and need to seek professional help.

Agreed!!
There is no doubt that the primary reason they wanted it online was to stop piracy and hacking of equipment. MS got lambasted and changed for them and they still whine.. blah... My XBone has been preordered, nuff said.. But I have a job and my own house.. :)

Well
I'm one of those geeks that will be buying a Sony and letting the 360 migrate to my kid's room when the next gen of consoles comes out. Yes they gave in to pressure for the sake of sales. But PS3 still isn't going to charge me a yearly fee to play with friends and watch netflix. Ultimately Microsoft is still far more expensive for not enough reasons to justify. Even if THIS time they were so scared of people boycotting them they gave in on the ADDED ridiculous. And, just like when public outcry stopped VZW from adding a processing fee to their payment processing, they'll find something less obvious to add cost to instead. I'm not refusing to buy another for this specific reason, the hardware and the yearly maintenance costs are why. But I won't forget they tried. That would be asking too much.

Bummed about this.
Microsoft had some interesting things planned as a tradeoff for always on and DRM, and those have been neatly slid off the table because of this. On the up side, it has left them with less DRM than Sony on next gen consoles. If Sony actually wants to move to digital (they have stated they do) then they've got to walk the same road and MS can can just let them bear the brunt of the ire as they follow.

He is going to be peed....
guess what in re:well. there will be a 5 dollar a month fee for PS4 PSN. Much like Xboxone... so your not getting away from your yearly maintenance costs, your just going to be paying 2 companies it.

SHE will not be that PO'd actually
She's been paying the fee to xbox for a while. While I hadn't bothered to do more than a hardware spec line up and did not realize Sony was going to force it, I'll just be giving them the money instead of Microsoft. Migrating to my son's room doesn't mean he's getting gold unless he's planning on working for it. But a quick comparison of value for cost. Microsoft is still lacking. Much like they always have.

Hmm....
Yeah, with the recent changes, if your an xbox fan and still pissed. grow the F*** up. i mean really now. i dont have a problem with DRM , what i had a problem with was if my router broke it meant i could play games? thats a bit overkill to protect your product. if you wanna hang a customer by a noose thats no sale. but if you want DRM on it and impliment it to a point where im not buying a 60 dolalr paper weight. thats fine. shesh. just chill internets they recanted.

Of course they need help
Certainly they need professional help BJ. These are people to most of whom a "video game" represents one of the most important fundamentals of their lives. Eternal, ongoing access to is demanded... to the point of borderline addiction and dependence. Their never-ending. primary focus is to be in front of a video game living a plastic child's fantasy hoping to be something in cyberspace they can't ever come close to aspiring to in real life. Even things like simple conversation, intelligent articulation, and the ability to spell words correctly escapes them. Help indeed!
