Earlier this week, we talked about the recent joke Dane Cook made that ended with him having to make a public apology. Here is the joke that got him trouble: “I heard that the guy came into the theater about 25 minutes [into the movie]. And I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie, but the movie’s pretty much a piece of crap. Yeah, spoiler alert. I know that if none of that would have happened, I’m pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in realizing it was a piece of crap, probably was like, ‘Ugh, f**ing shoot me.” I’ve heard that comedy bit before where someone is doing something they don’t like and they think “kill me” It’s not out of the realm of comedy to make a joke like that so I feel like the real reason everyone was really mad is because it happened a little less than 2 weeks ago and people feel like it’s too soon. I argue that in this day of social networking and being able to obtain information in mere seconds, is there really such thing as “too soon” anymore? Audiences want everything now regardless of what it is. Also, those people in the audience laughed, so if he’s doing what he’s doing and his target audience doesn’t get offended, then it’s hard to fault a guy for doing his job. The only thing that upset me about Dane Cook was his apology that was clearly written by his PR guy. "I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado and did not mean to make light of what happened. I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families and friends of the victims." He wasn’t really devastated by this because he wouldn’t have joked about it in the first place! I did however like how he said he made a bad judgment call on his material; he should have just said that instead. Why do performers have to keep apologizing for jokes that don’t offend their target audience but offend someone else? If you’re not who the joke is for, you shouldn’t get mad.? i feel that in reality, if you dont like too hear something? ignore it. if you think its too soon for those jokes? thats you. let the other people in the world who think its hilarious enjoy it. dont make the comedian apologize for some sensitive folk. dont wanna hear? move along then. didnt have a choice in hearing it? move on with your life. For christ's sake. The bodies weren't even buried yet when he made that joke. Show some class Dane. What pisses me off more is that people give this talentless hack any attention at all.

The Comedic Formula?

Dane still shouldn't have gone there. It's tactless. Irregardless of the target audience, it's way too soon and he should not have gone there. I can understand your stance on delivering to a particular audience and gaining a positive reaction. Dane seems like the kind of comedian who's continually struggling to gain acceptance with his outdated/predictable /- style. It's a bad move, dude.

His joke was bad and he should feel bad.

Yeah, it was insensitive, but what's worse is that it simply was not funny. His stand up routines are simply awful. Hell, he would've done better if he set it up as 'We all heard of the tragedy about the Dark Knight Rises shooting in Colorado? Ironically, someone was in the showing for Ted next door and was praying for death to end the movie.' Hell, that's pretty insensitive, but a step up since you get to poke fun at Seth MacFarlane, at least.

I agree

I completely agree with you BJ, but sadly in this day and age people don't know how to mind their own business. And with that comes the bullshit and good comedian and other famous people having to put out a fake apology to appease the simple mindedmasses. I think it's a funny joke and want to look it up on youtube now so I can see the routine.

Agree with bj

I agree with BJ, it was a poor taste joke only because it was too soon for some people. I thought it was funny, and I could really care less for dane cook. I saw dave attel almost immediately after the tsunami crisis and he made a joke about it being 'god's money shot' There was no uproar about that because dave is no longer anywhere near mainstream. Its because dane cook is in the spotlight, and everyone likes to see someone fall from grace

The only thing bad about his joke was saying batman sucked.

That joke was hilarious the only thing wrong about it was batman did not suck. We as a society need to stop being so sensitive and over react everytime something happens. Ifs ruining our society.

Tactless? Really?

To fault a comedian for being tactless is like faulting a disgruntled woman during her time of the month. It's pointless and it happens...naturally. We spend tons of money to go watch comedians, and enjoy their jokes, many of which are very tactless. Sam Kennison, Eddie Murphy, Roseanne Barr, and >shudders< Lisa Lampenelli, to name a few. The comedians made millions with tactless jokes made for their audiences. BJ has a point in that his material was suitable for his target audience. Indian puts ear to ground and says, "Buffalo Come!" His pal asks, "How can you tell?" Indian replies, "Ear sticky."
