BJ'S BLOG 11/26/13 "What's in a Name?"

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Personally, I’m feeling thankful for all of the Rock-a-Holics who put their faith in Group Therapy, each and every day.

Speaking of which, we have a new situation to discuss: Rock-a-Holic Kim is distressed, because her pregnant sister has decided to name her daughter “Stormy.”

The as-yet-unborn baby girl was conceived during a storm; the sister wants to pay tribute to that, while also giving her daughter a unique name. Meanwhile, Kim feels like naming a little girl Stormy is a sign that her sister should just go ahead and buy a stripper pole.

Let’s throw this out to all the blog readers: Does it really matter? Does the name define the person?

We’d also love to hear from anyone with a strange name! Has your name been a difficult thing to live with? Tell us your life story (please don’t tell us your life story).

I guess I’m also thankful that B.J. is a relatively normal name. At least it doesn’t stand for “Buffalo Jeremiah” or “Banana Jammer”…

Seriously?
Seriously? When I read the intro to this question I thought we were going down the Shenekwa and or Malakai aisle. Stormy is a relatively normal name by today's standards...and oh by the way, who really cares what anybody but the parents think? Since when does a sister get naming rights? Get over yourself and be happy for your sister, pray for a healthy, happy baby. A child's personality is 90% formed over the first 4 years of life, therefore with proper upbringing there is no reason to believe this little angel will be anything else. PS Stripper poles are a great way to exercise, so you may just want to get your niece one to help fight off the child obesity epidemic. ...Just sayin'. -Jeffro in Lakewood

It's fine
I grew up with a girl named Stormi (spelled with an I) and I honestly never gave her name a second thought. It's a nice name and it's really not that weird. Also, for the record, she did not grow up to be a stripper. ;)

I hated my unique name now I love it
Having a unique name, Dalia and no it's not pronounced like the flower it's duh-lee-uh, I can honestly say as a kid I hated it. I hated it because no one could say it right, and kids teased me because of it. Now tho I don't mind at all, I love it because I'm the only one around and it makes me different. Thank G-d I don't have a name like Emma or Jessica or anything like that, not that they are bad names it's just not unique. As for stormy it's her sisters kid sthu and leave it be. So what some stripper defiled the name, maybe this girl will undefiled it...that's my two cents.

Gale force winds = Stormy?
Storm is one of the X-Men, and Storm is the name of the female basketball team. Stormy will be made fun of in school, and as an adult it will be shortened just to Storm. Storms often have 'Gale' force winds, and 'Gale' is not a very popular name these days which makes it unique. Even more so you could name her Abigale and the last part of the name can pay tribute to the "gale' force winds during the storm. Instead of naming her just 'Stormy' go with something more sophisticated.
