SOUNDGARDEN: Super Into Science
In digging through their vaults for the Superunknown reissue, Soundgardenre-discovered an interesting TV appearance.
The group showed up on an episode of Bill Nye, The Science Guy, titled "Sound," that aired in November 1993. The show wanted to capture a band working in the studio, so the group and their engineer Adam Kasper talked about some mixing techniques and then played through "Kick Stand" for the cameras. Check out the clip on YouTube.
Anyone who saw the clip got a very early preview of Superunknown, since the album wasn't released until five months later. Bassist Ben Shepherd tells Spin, "I think it was right before we started mixing, so the record was done and we did a whole segment. Yeah, that's a weird episode of Bill Nye, talking about sound with Soundgarden." Guitarist Kim Thayil adds, "We always had a warm spot for kids' educational television. We always said if we were asked to do something on Sesame Street, we would do it, and that's no joke."
