Charles County Sheriff's Office Incident Reports

DOUBLE FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH: On April 7 at 4:30 a.m., officers responded to the 9100 block of Crain Highway in Bel Alton for the report of a car crash. A preliminary investigation showed the driver of a Hyundai was traveling south in the north bound lanes of Crain Highway when she struck a Dodge Caravan head-on which was heading north. The driver of the Caravan, a 32-year-old male, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, a 22-year-old female, was ejected from her car. She was transported to Civista Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. At this point, it is unclear why the driver of the Hyundai was traveling on the wrong side of the highway. Cpl. B. Saunders of the CCSO Traffic Operations Unit is investigating. Names of both drivers will be released once next of kin has been notified.

DEATH INVESTIGATION: On April 5 at about 4 p.m., officers responded to the 2900 block of Eutaw Forest Drive in Waldorf for the report of an injured child. A preliminary investigation showed Leilah Dawn Coady, 3, was in the garage portion of her house when she apparently pushed a garage door button which was affixed to the wall and within her reach. The girl ran under the door as it was closing and became pinned underneath as the door went down. She was discovered by her mother a short time later. Emergency responders arrived and transported the victim to Civista Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Investigators from the Criminal Investigations Division and the CCSO Forensics Unit responded and processed the scene for evidence.  The garage door did have sensors on either side and detectives are working to determine if the door was functioning properly. The manner of death appears to be accidental. The investigation is on-going.
