Day 771 (06/30/09) Jon, Joey, and Alice!!!!

Day 771 (06/30/09) Jon, Joey, and Alice!!!!

Huge thanks to Jon Voight for calling in this morning.  Yes, Jon is the dad of Angelina Jolie, but there is WAY more to him that just having good genes.  He has been in some awesome films…Varsity Blues, Transformers, Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance, and so much more.  Jon was on to chat about a DVD release of one of his films from back in the 80’s called “Looking To Get Out” – it’s the Director’s Cut – Available TODAY!  The film is about two gamblers must leave New York City after one loses a lot of money. Doing what all gamblers in trouble would do, they hurry to the gambling capital Las Vegas to turn their luck around.  The crazy part is this film marks the film debut of Angelina Jolie.  She was 7 years old when she starred in this film.  I dug the back story about how this directors cut came about…especially since the director, Hal Ashby, passed away back in 1988 (Ashby died of cancer in 1988 at the age of 59).  Hal apparently cut this version on his own when the studio insisted on the cut that was released theatrically. He put it away in the garage and never mentioned it to anyone. After he died his daughter donated his archives to UCLA who received the film, entered it in their catalog and no one thought much about it until Voight just by chance conversation heard it existed and was there. He got so excited when he saw Ashby's cut he convinced Warner Home Video to put it out on DVD he loves this performance so much more than the theatrical version this is the performance he intended.

Jon was the focal point of a hilarious episode of Seinfeld as well, when George bought a car because he thought it was once owned by Jon Voight…turned out it was a different Jon Voight, one that spells his name JoHn.  Jon was a great guest, hell he gave us his home # for future chats, plus I liked Jon because he liked my intro:

Our next guest has had a far too accomplished career to be talking to a drunk…a stoner, a dog lover…and a guy with horrible  I.B.S…but it’s too late to fix that…please welcome to the show…Jon Voight

Huge thanks to Joey Kramer of Aerosmith for calling in this morning.  Joey has a new book which he hopes will be an inspiration for people called…”Hit Hard: A story of Hitting Rock Bottom At The Top.”  It’s all about his battles with drugs & depression while being on top of the world in one of the biggest bands of all time.  Joey seems like a great guy, I tried to convince him to let me jam with the band on Walk This Way when they lay at the White River Amphitheater on August 17th --  he wasn’t too willing to hand over the sticks.  Double R asked a strange question…he asked him when Joey was going through his drug phase…did he ever take a mound of coke, and cut it up in fun designs…like turning it into a Aerosmith logo…Joey said if he would have a giant mound of coke back in the day…he would choose to snort it, and not turn it into logos.

We played the new Alice In Chains song this morning…I LOVE IT!!!!!  The song is called “A Looking In View” off their CD “Black Gives Way To Blue” which comes out on September 29th.  After hearing this song, I can not wait to hear the new CD…the song gave me goose bumps.  Hearing Alice In Chains again is a good thing, and William Duvall’s voice sounds great paired up with Jerry’s harmonies.  I forgot how much I loved this band…I am glad they are back!  The song is now available for purchase via iTunes and Amazon.
