As you know, Kurt Cobain would have been 47 today. Aberdeen is celebrating Kurt Cobain Day today in his honor. They have a new exhibit honoring his contributions to music at the city's Museum of History.
In a way Kurt’s Birthday is a slow ramp up to Nirvana’s induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame! Then don’t forget in April KISW’S Seattle Rock Day where we celebrate all of our greats in one glorious day!
Tonight for 90 Something we go all Nirvana! I would love your suggestions on which Nirvana tracks to play. Hell I’ll break the rules and play some goodness from Bleach (89’) if ya like. No rules, just NIRVANA tonight for 90 Something!
Check out this Laurence Romance interview Kurt Cobain at Edgewater Inn. Lots of great local shots from back in the day.
KISS debut 40 years old today!!!
I have such a soft spot for early KISS. They were still a little rough around the edges. A band working hard to break, and before all the band member drama/baggage.
Their debut album turns 40 today. To celebrate at 9:45 tonight I’ll kick off a block from that album!
KISS: Introduced to the World 40 Years Ago Today
KISS released their first album 40 years ago today: February 18th, 1974. The self-titled release contained 10 songs, including such now-classics as "Strutter," "Firehouse" and "Black Diamond." (A cover of Bobby Rydell's "Kissin' Time" was added when the album was reissued in July of '74.) The original album only sold 75-thousand copies in 1974, but was certified gold three years later. The highest chart position it reached was number-38 -- in New Zealand.
The album cover echoes Meet The Beatles and has guitarist Ace Frehley with spray-painted silver hair that he thought would wash out. It didn't. Drummer Peter Criss had a professional do his make-up for the cover but did not like how it turned out and went back to doing it himself after that. KISS track listing:
"Strutter" (originally titled "Stanley the Parrot")
An overall breakdown for men and women wasn't provided, but the site notes that the most-popular "write-in" choices for WOMEN were "gospel music" and EMINEM, and the most-popular write-ins for MEN were ADELE and TUPAC.
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS: Chad and His Twin to Do a Drum Off
The real reason behind Red Hot Chil Peppers' Chad Smith and Will Ferrell's Internet sniping? Charity.
The whole joking between the two -- who, let's face it, look enough alike to be brothers -- started when Ferrell noted the similarity between him and Smith during a Reddit AMAsession and then posted a video on Funny Or Die's Instagram account saying, "It was great to finally clear up the fact that I am Chad Smith." Smith responded with his own video on Funny Or Die, telling Ferrell, "Stop impersonating me," and challenging him to a drum battle.
Ferrell responded over the weekend, writing on Smith's Reddit AMA, "I saw your video and I graciously accept your invitation to a drum battle. If we can raise $300,000 for Cancer for College I will face off with you in the greatest drum vs. cowbell showdown the world has ever seen." Smith responded by saying, "Tell Will Ferrell anytime, anyplace, I'll take him down. I don't want to embarrass him, but I'd say don't bring your family. Especially children. I don't want them to see this."
No date or venue has been announced yet for the charity drum battle.
METALLICA: Wait, Is That Hetfield in Guitar Center?
But did he play Stairway?
If you hear someone playing a Metallica riff at a Guitar Center, it might be James Hetfield.
Hetfield recently took part in Guitar Center's interview series at their San Francisco location. And customers roaming around the store had no idea that it was Hetfield tearing through numerous riffs from the Metallica catalog. Check out the video!
