STP's BLOG 04/16/14 "The Guessing Game"

There is a brand new STP-CAST up! It's a real good one, as my buds in The Guessing Game joined us to play a couple songs. Who is The Guessing Game you ask? Well…it's a band of great musicians that have played in bands you are probably familiar with…fronted by Jeff Rouse from Duff McKagan's LOADED. Also in the band…Kathy Moore (Brad, Satchel) , Gary Westlake (Kristen Ward, Flight To Mars), Keith Ash (Star Anna) , and Shawn Zellar (Redneck Girlfriend).

 photo guessinggamestp_zps0c71d44c.jpg

Their new CD is out now, titled "Holy Crow", and I absolutely love it. If you are a fan of powerful songs with great hooks, you will dig this! It reminds me of my favorite time music-wise... 90's rock/alt-rock. Last week on the STP-CAST we were jamming to this great song…

They are playing their CD release show on May 9th at the Sunset tavern in Ballard, I will be there…in fact I will be jumping on drums with them for a song at some point during the set! Get more info on the band at www.theguessinggameband.com

Listen to the entire interview on iTUNES, Stitcher (search STP-CAST), or click HERE!

Here they are performing "Selling Heartbreak" on the STP-CAST!

Speaking of the STP-CAST, we got this message from Brett on our STP-CAST Facebook Group:

Holy cow, I just pulled an ab muscle laughing when Toppy switched the channels on Mono Nick and Steve! That was amazing!!!!

What is he talking about? Well we wound up having a conversation wondering if anyone has ever done a podcast on acid, and this happened…

STP's BLOG 04/15/14 "Airlines In The News"

With airlines in the news recently for what people tweet to them (that 14 year old that tweeted a terrorist treat) or what they tweet their customers (US Airways accidentally Tweeted a very dirty pic to a complainer)…it's nice to read a less troubling story like this one:

A Southwest flight attendant tried to turn her pre-flight safety announcements into a stand-up routine recently, and one of the passengers got it on video. Two of her biggest laughs were when she said that in order to activate your oxygen mask, you have to insert 75 cents for the first minute. She also said, "If you're traveling with small children . . . we're sorry." Check it out:

And now…a cute picture of my pup enjoying the sun yesterday!

Yesterday something really cool showed up in the mail. It's a small wireless speaker called the PortaParty. Check them out at www.chicbuds.com -- you can play your music from your phone (or MP3 player) via Bluetooth. This is perfect as I can bring this with me when I travel as I like to listen to music in the hotel, plus…I can have this outside when Bar-B-Q'ing, etc. I have tried similar ones like this before, but they didn't have any bass, so I was stoked to hear bass in this little speaker…it sounds awesome. Here is a video of Vicky B. catching me trying it out for the first time.

STP's BLOG 04/14/14 "Biggest Wheel Of Fortune Fail Ever!"

I had a memorable weekend…granted, I didn't get in trouble for yelling "bomb" at an airport like Aldon Smith of the 49ers (what the hell was he thinking), but mine was memorable for good reasons…

My beer league hockey team, the Tacoma Donkeys, won the RHL's Rainier Cup on Saturday night…it was an awesome night with great buds!

 photo donk5_zpsa56b9992.jpg

 photo donk4_zps0943bdde.jpg

Of course we had to have the obigitory "Ellen Selfie"!

 photo donk1_zpsb660d2c2.jpg

And when you play in a beer league…this is what the aftermath looks like…

 photo donk3_zpsd1b38bd5.jpg

This is one of the greatest "fails" of all time! A student from Indiana University named Julian was one of the contestants on Friday's "Wheel of Fortune", and he had a chance to win a million dollars after the wheel landed on the million-dollar prize. All he had to do was solve the puzzle. This should have been easy as all of the letters were flipped over, and the answer was "Mythological Hero Achilles".

Slight problem…he didn't know how to pronounce "Achilles" – he pronounced it "AY-chill-ess" , so he got nothing!.

Later in the game, he had a chance to win a car by solving the puzzle "World's Fastest Man"… all but two letters in the word "Man" were exposed. Yet, he messed that up too.

That's not all…he still screwed up s'more! Tthere was a puzzle where it was fairly obvious that the answer was "On-the-Spot Decision", but he guessed "On-the-Spot DICE SPIN." What the hell?!? Check it out…

This seems so beyond incredible…I almost think this guy was purposely stinking up the joint so that he will forever be immortalized as the dumbest contestant to ever play Wheel Of Fortune! The crazy part (besides all of the above), was that he was the winner of that night's episode as he won the most money.

STP's BLOG 04/11/14 "Nirvana Live!"

Last night was a magical moment for Nirvana fans. The band was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Eventually this will be shown on HBO, but to tie us Nirvana fans over I came across some bootleg videos. Here is the acceptance speech…Dave Grohl is the man, I love how he shows love to all the other drummers of Nirvana…especially Chad Channing!

I do have to say it was lame of the crowd to boo Courtney Love…whatever you think of her…that wasn't the night to be jerks. It was a powerful moment to see her and Dave hug…it felt like a real moment. I am glad they could all be civil and cool on a special night.

Nirvana then performed…just typing that gave me goose bumps, look I am a huge Nirvana fan…all of this is truly incredible to me. Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear took the stage with four different singers…I thought it was interesting that they were all female artists.

Joan Jett sang "Smells Like Teen Spirit" . . . Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth sang "Aneurysm" . . . Anne Clarke, also known as St. Vincent, did "Lithium" . . . and then Lorde came out for "All Apologies".

Here is Smells Like Teen Spirit:

Here is All Apologies…

Ok, so in addition to them playing at the Hall of Fame…Nirvana then decided to do a secret show in Brooklyn at a club that fits 200 people. What? Yes. Are you S***ing me?!? Wow. I know I have written a few one word sentences there…but that's about all I am able to do right now. I can't believe this. Here is the set list with who sang with them…

Smells Like Teen Spirit (with Joan Jett)
Breed (with Joan Jett)
In Bloom (with Joan Jett)
Territorial Pissings (with Joan Jett)
Drain You (with J. Mascis)
Pennyroyal Tea (with J. Mascis)
School (with J. Mascis)
Lithium (with Annie Clark AKA St. Vincent)
About A Girl (with Annie Clark)
Heart Shaped Box (with Annie Clark)
Serve the Servants (with John McCauley)
Scentless Apprentice (with John McCauley)
Tourette's (with John McCauley)
Aneurysm (with Kim Gordon)
Negative Creep (with Kim Gordon)
MV (with Kim Gordon)

Here they are performing Heart Shaped Box with St. Vincent…

STP's BLOG 04/09/14 "RIP Ultimate Warrior"

I'm a little tired today, I couldn't sleep after I heard the news about The Ultimate Warrior dying.

I was on Twitter last night, and came across Triple H's tweet and could believe it…

Saddened to announce the passing of the Ultimate Warrior. Icon and friend. My sympathy to his wife Dana and his daughters

For all of us wrestling fans, we just saw Warrior on Monday Night Raw the night before he died (word is that he collapsed leaving a hotel in Arizona with his wife, and was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead)…re-watching this is awfully eerie as it feels like he gave his own eulogy. Check it out here:

We also saw him Saturday night as he gave a great speech at the Hall Of Fame, he addressed how tough it is that he can't physically do what he used to be able to do, and it was tough for him. Looking back at all of this stuff from the past weekend and how he finally celebrated for his accomplishments was so awesome, so when I read the news that he died yesterday it was bittersweet. I am glad that he finally had his moment…it was nearly 20 years since he stepped foot in the WWE ring.

I could go on and on about how much I loved the Warrior…his insane promos, his frantic matches in the ring…but I wanted to share Daniel Bryan's thoughts that he posted on witter, as he had great words for the man from "Parts Unknown":

Heartbroken. My sincerest condolences go out to The Warrior's family. Seeing how much he loved his daughters and his wife this weekend makes it all the more heartbreaking. The Ultimate Warrior was my favorite as a kid, and getting to speak to him this weekend was one of my favorite moments. He was so nice to me. #RIPWarrior

Speaking of his promo's…here is a classic one…

One thing I do want to say, and I am sorry if I sound like a jerk, as I have seen a lot of friends post something like this:

"First the Undertaker's Streak ends, and now the Warrior is dead…tough weekend for wrestling"

Can we get some perspective people? This is one of the dumbest things I have ever read. I get that we all handle loss and sadness differently, but to compare a fictional storyline about a streak to a guy ACTUALLY DYING is ridiculous. Stop it already.

Warrior was not only one of my favorite wrestlers, but he was one of my favorite interviews…I remember being so stoked to book him on our show. The interview wound up making wrestling news at the time, as Warrior stated that he wanted to wrestle Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania 25 (how awesome would that have been). We did this interview back in April of 2008, if you are a fan of the Warrior…you should listen to it. Check it out HERE!

STP's BLOG 04/07/14 "Wrestlemania 30 Review"

So yesterday was Wrestlemania…one of the most entertaining Wrestlemania's I have seen in a while. This isn't a knock on past Wrestlemania's I have enjoyed the last few thoroughly, but this one was great from beginning to end.

The big story was the fact that the Undertaker's streak is dead. Yup…Brock Lesnar put an end to it with his third F-5. The look of shock on the crowd was probably one of the greatest things I have seen in all the years of watching wrestling. So many people are PISSED about the ending, they are pissed that he lost to a "part-timer", etc…they are pissed because they didn't see it coming.

Which is why I loved it.

There are some great fan rection pix on the WWE's site…check them out HERE.

I love that the WWE out-smarted the know-it-all fans. The fans that suck the life out of just watching wrestling and enjoying it for what it is…ENTERTAINMENT. The WWE needed to do this, this got people talking…as I left the Wrestlemania party I went to, I turned on Sports Radio…there was some national show talking in depth about what happened to The Undertaker. This made mainstream news. Props to the WWE for taking a chance, an unpopular chance, and props to The Undertaker for being on board and not letting the ego of having this fictional "streak" continue.

Between that and Daniel Bryan winning the WWE Championship…I was a happy fellow. Plus, I got to watch it with some of my buds…while wearing Luchador masks!

 photo wm2_zpsb851bc26.jpg

I will be recording a special STP-CAST all about Wrestlemania today. By the time you read it, it might be up...I'm going in the studio to record it right now. It will be up on iTUNES & Stitcher (search STP-CAST), or find it HERE. It should be posted after 10 AM.

STP's BLOG 04/03/14 "Seattle Rock Day"

Today we are paying tribute to the music of the Northwest with Seattle Rock Day. I love this day! The music of Seattle is something that has been close to since the minute I was first exposed to it in high school. Bands like Mudhoney…Alice In Chains…Pearl Jam…Nirvana…and the list goes on and on.

This music shaped my taste in music. I related to what these guys were writing WAY more than the hair metal music I was digging beforehand. Plus there wasn't enough hairspray out there to make my hair look cool. I can't even count the number of hours spent with my Walkman on listening to Soundgarden's Louder Than Love…or Pearl Jam's Ten. I joined all the fan clubs from the Ten Club to the Knights Of The Soundtable…I would look forward to when Sub Pop would send out their mailer for new music (remember kids, there was no internets for us to order stuff…we had to do it the old fashioned way and check a box on the catalog newsletter, write out a check, and mail it back). My day was especially made when I would get the latest newsletter from the Ten Club…

 photo pjletter_zps9dc244c0.jpg

In college my obsession grew even stronger…listening to these bands non-stop…spinning their records on college radio all the time…and I believe my entire wardrobe consisted of shirts that promoted the bands of Seattle.

 photo tbt2_zpsfd6ddf33.jpg

Hell I even had one of those "Citizen Dick" shirts for that fictional Seattle band featured in the movie Singles. I wish I still had that one lying around!

I'm racking my brain trying to remember which band/song was the one that first got me hooked, but I honestly can't as it all blurs together…for a kid on the East Coast, the Seattle sound exploded in just a few short months! These are the three songs that strike me as the ones that were a part of the introduction to Seattle for me…

STP's BLOG 04/02/14 "Mouse"

Today we were talking about the story of the 2 women that freaked out while on I-5 when a mouse ran across their laps. This would freak me out too…I think it would freak anyone out! So Toppy, because he clearly hates me, asked me what I think that mouse sounded like when running across their laps. So ladies and gents, here is my mouse "impression"

I have no idea what I am doing with my hands.

Brand new STP-CAST is up. Get it on Stitcher or iTUNES, and we interview Rowdy Roddy Piper, which was awesome. Plus I introduce the gang to the greatest invention of all time… Cookie Butter. You can get it at Trader Joe's, and when we all sampled it…I suggested that people pause the podcast…go to "Joe's" and get a jar, and experience the moment with us. My day was made when I got this tweet from a "Titanic Douche":

STP's BLOG 04/01/14 "How I Met You Mother Finale = Genius"

So if you haven't watched the final episode of How I Met Your Mother, and plan to…you might want to skip this blog.

Here is why I think the final episode of How I Met Your Mother was brilliant.

They did something that none of us expected, and the way they did it couldn't have been executed better. Ok, in a nutshell. We finally meet "the mother", and in the final episode…after 9 years of wanting to know how Ted meets her…we learn that as "old" Ted is sharing the story to his kids of how he met their mom, she is already DEAD! I, and pretty much everyone watching, was not expecting that she would get sick and die after they get married. Looking back on it, the writers were genius for not introducing the mom sooner…at no point did we really get emotionally attached to her character, yeah she seemed cool, but it wasn't like they killed off Lilly or Barney or something. Having her die so that eventually Ted would end up with Robin was an incredible ending…it made the way they wrote the final season make all the sense in the world. We all just assumed that Robin would live a life wondering "what if" when it came to her and Ted, only for the show to end with the Blue French Horn…coming full circle to the beginning! It was a heavy ending but when his kids pointed out how the story was more about Ted's love for Robin, it made all the sense in the world. Great job writer people. Great job.

Of course people went on twitter and were beyond pissed about the ending. Man people were really mad….livid in some instances. I guess that is the true testament to a shows connection to their fan base. Even if I hated it, I wouldn't be that mad. So many people wrote that they felt that they wasted 9 years of their life watching that. C'mon…were you entertained from the 9 seasons, if so…chill out. If you weren't entertained by the show for the last 9 seasons, why the hell were you still watching it? I had to respond to all the negativity via twitter…
