STP's BLOG 05/05/15 "Nirvana...Riots...and Boxing!"

I hope you caught Montage Of Heck on HBO last night…if not, be sure to check it out! We got this text, it's awesome to hear from many listeners that enjoyed this movie based on our recommendation…

If you missed our chat with Brett Morgan, the director of Montage of Heck… listen here:

On Friday night I watched Q13's coverage of the May Day Riots. I have to give props to David Rose and the rest of the crew that were in the streets during the riots. At one point, David hit his breaking point…and I don't blame him one bit, as the whole time they reported…people were screaming obscenities in their face and physically assaulting the camera men.

This weekend was also the Mayweather fight (sorry we were off yesterday so I am a little late for my review)… I think Seahawks Tight End Luke Willson summed it up best…

I agree 100%... I get that the boxing purists argue that part of being a great boxer is avoiding being hit… I understand that…but I liken it to the "trap" defense in hockey. It's a defensive minded approach to hockey that is very effective when done…but it's boring and has hurt the sport when it comes to the casual fan. I am not a fan of that, and you would think I would embrace it, as the NJ Devils (my favorite team) won 3 Stanley Cups in the 1990's and 200's because of that "trap" defense.

The highlight of my weekend? I got a new drum set. Ok…it was made in the 70's…but it is new to me. I am so pumped with this purchase…I finally got to hit them on Sunday, and they sound HUGE!

The other highlight of my weekend…hanging with my brother…my hockey team… the Tacoma Donkeys. We all got together to celebrate our championship season, and watched the fights on Saturday!

You gotta love the Gas Man, our bud Mike Gastineau always leaves the best comments on the things I post!

STP's BLOG 05/01/15 "Help Out Windowpane!"

So over the years I have been lucky to have become buds with some talented musicians in the Seattle area…the music community here is an impressive one, and one of the best dudes I have ever met…and one talented guitarist/singer is Glenn Cannon from Windowpane. All the dudes in the band are awesome (what's up Tony, Mark, and Sean!)…and I have been lucky to jam with some of these guys in the past.

Windowpane are in the process of making a new record, and they need your help…they created a Kickstarter for it where you can buy the record in advance (in addition to other perks) and help fund the recording process. There is only 11 days left to back it…I have donated, so has BJ… and you can too right HERE!

Recently the guys in Windowpane were on my podcast…if you missed it, you can listen to the full podcast HERE.

While they were in studio they gave us a taste of their new record with 2 new songs…

Plus, while they were in studio…we had some fun with my GarageBand app and we "jammed" to Black Sabbath's "War Pigs":

They just made a documentary called "There Is No Such Thing As the Record Label Fairy", and it's FREE to watch! You can check out a live screening of the film on Thursday May 7th at Louie G's in Fife! Here is the film:

STP's BLOG 04/29/15 "Business In Front...."

Yesterday I was doing some cleaning.  Ok…I wasn’t really cleaning, I was looking for something, and the residual effect of looking for something led to me cleaning some of my mess up.  While on the hunt for whatever it was that I was looking for…yes, I really can’t remember at this moment what I was trying to find...welcome to my world of fried brain cells (thank you Plattsburgh State University)…I came across some pictures.  Of the pictures I found, this one takes the cake…

This pic rules mainly because of that glorious mullet.  Man that was a great look.  This pic also rules because of that old school (although at the time it was new school) Winnipeg Jets jersey!

Huge thanks to  Nick Kroll for joining us in studio yesterday.  Nick is Ruxin from The League, and he was in town for a movie that he made called Adult Beginners.

This is a really fun film…it has a great story, as it touches on love…family relationships…and most importantly tackles a huge issue:  what life would be like if Joel McHale was on a coke bender.  Check out the trailer…

While Nick was in studio, he was sitting in front of a computer…before we went live on the air he was typing into that computer.  As soon as he left I checked it out, and this is what he typed…

STP's BLOG 04/28/15 "Drums...Drums...Drums!"

Yesterday I went to Guitar Center to get some new drum heads for my drums…I just started playing more again, so it’s fun to kick out the jams on these bad boys once again…

Still putting these to work @nabilayers !#BoomTheory #drums #customdrums

Even though I love those drums... my true love will always be with Ludwig Drums that were made in the 70's.  Hell I have another kit, and it's a mid 70's Black Ludwig set.

<div style=" background:url(data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAACwAAAAsCAMAAAApWqozAAAAGFBMVEUiIiI9PT0eHh4gIB4hIBkcHBwcHBwcHBydr+JQAAAACHRSTlMABA4YHyQsM5jtaMwAAADfSURBVDjL7ZVBEgMhCAQBAf//42xcNbpAqakcM0ftUmFAAIBE81IqBJdS3lS6zs3bIpB9WED3YYXFPmHRfT8sgyrCP1x8uEUxLMzNWElFOYCV6mHWWwMzdPEKHlhLw7NWJqkHc4uIZphavDzA2JPzUDsBZziNae2S6owH8xPmX8G7zzgKEOPUoYHvGz1TBCxMkd3kwNVbU0gKHkx+iZILf77IofhrY1nYFnB/lQPb79drWOyJVa/DAvg9B/rLB4cC+Nqgdz/TvBbBnr6GBReqn/nRmDgaQEej7WhonozjF+Y2I/fZou/qAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC); display:block; height:44px; margin:0

Only there is one problem, as much as I love my drums… I will forever have a love affair with Ludwig drums that were made in the 70’s.  I currently have a mid 70’s black Ludwig kit that I love…

A photo posted by Steve Migliore (@stevemigs) on

But yesterday I saw something that makes me want to leave my black kit and switch to red!

These drums are glorious.  They are all that I am thinking about.  It’s a sickness…hell when I walked into Guitar Center I told myself “Steve, do not look at drums…go straight to the drum head section…get your heads and some sticks and get the hell out”.  I was one foot out of the drum section when I locked eyes on those bad boys!  Love at first site…damn you Guitar Center!!

Speaking of drums… for those fellow drummers out there…my buddy Jesse Smith (he’s played in bands like Fall From Grace, Saqqara, and currently plays in the Infinity Project – an awesome Journey tribute band) just turned me on to some new cymbals by a company called Soultone Cymbals.  Drummer friends – try these out, I absolutely love the cymbal I bought.

Now if I could only find someone that sells Satin Steel drums… I would make a full circle to when I first started played…yes, that is me on the drums!

Rocking the Satin Steel! #tbt

STP's BLOG 04/27/15 "The Joker"

Want to piss of the internet?  It’s easy…just post this tweet and watch the internet implode…

Suicide Squad director David Ayers unveiled the first full look at Jared Leto as The Joker. Social media erupted and many fans are pissed with the look. Personally – I think it’s awesome.  Just like how Heath Ledger’s Joker was nothing like how Jack Nicholson’s Joker looked…I love how this version of the Joker is completely different.  It’s fresh, and once again p[roves that people HATE change.

Speaking of Twitter… Man my weekend was made when I saw that one of my favorite music sites, Blabbermouth, used an interview we did for a story they put out!

So I then go on their site, and find out that wasn’t the only time this weekend that they used one of our interviews from the STP-CAST as a source for a story!

Then later on I found out that NME also reported on the Michael from Volbeat interview we did!

Damn.  That’s huge in my world... being flattered doesn’t even do it justice.

Finally… I want to give props to my bud John’s son Evan Sarthou.  Evan is a goalie and plays in the WHL for the Tri Cities Americans...and was selected to be the goalie for the Under 18 (U18) USA Hockey team, and yesterday they won the gold medal…beating Finland, and he was named USA’s player of the game!

No better feeling! World champs!🇺🇸

A photo posted by Evan Sarthou (@sarts31) on

I have been lucky enough to play hockey with Evan in the summer from time to time, and he’s a great guy… I couldn’t be happier for him.  Plus he is the next great thing to come out of Black Diamond…move over Sir Mix A Lot!

I also have to give props to Evan, as he was kind enough to hook me up with some of his old gear last summer... I still use his brand of sticks, and other gear too (skates, chest protecter, etc).  So he not only contributed to a gold medal, but in a roundabout way contributed to a RHL Championship haha!

STP's BLOG 04/24/15 "Donkeys Are Champs"

Last night my beer league hockey team, the Tacoma Donkeys, won the championship…three-peat baby!!

Thanks to Seattle’s Biggest sports fan, Big Lo, for coming to our games…as well as James, Nakia, and the rest of their crew for cheering us on!

Of course we then had to celebrate in the locker room…and there is nothing better than spraying champagne in the locker room…especially in slow motion!

If you haven't seen the music video that was made by the Lyon Pride Music guys about our trip to Spokane...check it out!

STP's BLOG 04/23/15 "Montage Of Heck - Review"

Last night I was lucky enough to check out the new documentary that Brett Morgen made about Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.  It’s called Montage Of Heck, and here is a trailer for the film…

Here is another clip from the film to give you a vibe of how they intertwined Kurts music and art into this film.

What did I think of the film?  Here is what I posted on Instagram:

One of the heaviest and most incredible things I have ever seen. A must watch for #Nirvana fans. #MontageOfHeck

A photo posted by Steve Migliore (@stevemigs) on

Here is my full review.  Brett Morgen created a masterpiece.  It’s a must watch for any Nirvana fan, plus I suggest anyone who is a fan of music to watch this.  Hell…if you are interested in going inside the mind of an artist, you should watch this.  It’s at The Egyptian Theater for a week, and then it premieres on HBO on May 4th.

I mean this with all of my heart – Brett Morgen didn’t just set a new standard for music documentaries…he set the standard for all documentaries.  The bar is very high now.

This film isn’t about Kurt, the myth…it’s about Kurt, the man.  I walked away from this film like I now know Kurt in a way, I know that sounds silly, but it’s true… you see Kurt in all of his strengths and flaws.  Plus, I walked away from this with a better understanding of Courtney.  It’s a story of a kid that is just looking for love, looking to be cared for…and the demons that consume him due to success.

After the film,  I put their final record, “In Utero”,  on as I drove home.  I listened to every word that he sang and yelled, and the record hit me in a way that I think you’ll understand after watching the movie.

Also…thanks to the film… this unplugged performance of  “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” will forever have an emotional effect on me. I look forward to chatting with people after they see this film to see if it hits them in the same way.

This film is going to take a bit for me to fully digest.   It’s funny…before the film, Thee Ted Smith and I were in a joyous goofy mood… as you can see in the Facebook video we posted.

We are about to watch #MontageOfHeck ...the Kurt Cobain documentary.  #ManDate. -Steve The Producer & Thee Ted Smith

After the film, we had plans to go to the after party at EMP, but when the credits hit…both of us sat in silence.  When we finally spoke, neither of us was in the mood to “party”, both of us needed time to reflect.  The movie was THAT powerful.
