LeVar Burton's Kickstarter campaign for a new version of "Reading Rainbow" collected a million dollars on its FIRST DAY. The campaign reached TWO MILLION on the second day, and kept on going. Wow.
This is one of the rare instances that I am not sick to my stomach to read about KickStarter or any of these crowd funded sites. I say I’m not sick to my stomoach about it, but at thew end of the day.,..I am still not a fan of this being the way “we” get things done. I dig that the end goal is for the kids (regarding Reading Rainbow), but I HATE HATE HATE that we no longer “work” to make things happen, and we just put it on a website and hope people will give out money to us.
I know I am old fashioned about this, and hell…I’m a hypocrite as I have given to some of these…but as a guy that had to save money to get the things I want…including creative outlets like recording music, etc…I just hate that the art of “busting your ass” to “make it” is gone. Now if you have a movie you are trying to make…or your band wants to make a record…you make a video begging for money, and offer silly incentives to get people to pay.
For instance…on this Reading Rainbow thing…if you donate $10,000…you and a friend could get dinner with LeVar, and you can wear his visor that he wore when he was on Star Trek. No, you don’t get to keep it for 10 grand…you get to wear it. Seriously? Ok…I’m stepping off my soap box, I am sorry!
I love those awkward moments that happen on TV. I dig them because I think we all strive for perfection to the point where it can drive us nuts…so to see a moments of imperfection can lighten life up a bit. Here is a great excaple of that… a Fox News affiliate in Detroit cut to a camera mounted 300 feet high on their TV tower last Sunday morning, and when they were doing the weather they got a live shot of a workman's FACE as he was cleaning the lens.
So if you have read my blog yesterday…or have been listening to my podcast, the STP-CAST, or Ted Smith’s podcast, Thee Podcast…we have been talking about doing a live event and calling it the Mega Cast. The name is a nod to the time when Hulk Hogan & Macho Man Savage joined forces and became the Mega Powers. How odd is this…just last week the WWE premiered a special about the Mega Powers…I can’t wait to watch this!
Well…huge props to a fine listener of the STP-CAST, Chris…for creating this amazing logo!
Chris is a great Graphic Artist…check his stuff out here: http://www.christopherdahl.com/
I love that the STP-CAST logo (which he designed) is in his portfolio – that rocks!
You want to make your day better…watch this…these kids are awesome!
So if you listen to either my podcast, the STP-CAST, or Thee Ted Smith’s Podcast, Thee Podcast, you might have heard about how we are planning a live show where the two podcasts come together for what we call a “Mega-Cast”.
Just like when Macho Man Randy Savage & Hulk Hogan teamed up back in the day and became the Mega Powers…Ted & I are joining forces for a live show of sheer stupidity.
What would it sound like…well Ted popped in on this week’s STP-Cast, so here is just a taste of the #MegaCast …
Listen to this week's STP-CAST on iTUNES, Stitcher, or HERE!
Sad news…Award-winning author, poet, and civil rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou has died at the age of 86. This is by no means a touching tribute, but my personal connection to Maya dates back to college when I took a Women Studies class…saying you were reading Maya Angelou was a sure fire way to impess a lady, so I thank Maya for that!
Last week, Maya posted what is now her final tweet…she wrote:
Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God.
That’s a powerful last tweet…that got me thinking maybe I need to be more aware of what I write, as you never know it could be your last tweet…for example…here is the last tweet I posted (at the time I wrote this blog):
Here is Toppy’s last tweet (posted on Easter…yes, Topshelf is very active on the Twitter):
Michael Bennett from the Hawks is having a fun event this Saturday afternoon to raise money and awareness for his charity, Ocean! (fighting obesity through community, education, activity and nutrition). Here he is talking about his charity event this Saturday!
In addition to Michael being there, there will be other Seahawks players to meet! Guys like, Percy Harvin, Bruce Irvin, Kam Chancellor, Jermaine Kearse, Malcolm Smith, Doug Baldwin Jr., and more! The event will be this Saturday from 1 PM until 4 PM at the Columbia Tower Club. Hell..I’ll be there!
Recently, I saw that Michael Bennett got to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Mariners game…check out his Instagram post about it:
Thankfully he doesn’t have an arm like 50 Cent! 50 Cent threw out the first pitch at a Mets game yesterday...and the ball went about 20 feet left of home plate. In fact, it was so bad that it almost hit a cameraman! This made me laugh out loud when I first watched it! Make sure you aren’t drinking coffee while watching this!
Huge thanks to Bert Kreischer for joining us this morning. Bert is the host of Trip Flip on the Travel Channel, and is one funny dude! He has a great new book out called “Life Of The Party”…I got it yesterday and I am almost done reading it already! It feels like Bert is telling you these crazy stories in a room with you as you read it. As a non-reader, it’s a must read…hell, it’s “Lulu Approved”!
I’m not going to spoil anything…but if you have been hearing people rave about that HBO show called True Detective….believe the hype. This show exceeded the hype I heard, it’s right up there with Breaking Bad as one of the best TV shows I have watched. It is on HBO…all of the first season is up On Demand, and it stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson…and these guys put on an acting clinic. I can’t recommend this enough. My wife and I watched the entire season on Sunday and Monday. We watched 6 episodes on Sunday, and watched the final 2 yesterday…talk about binge watch!
BVJ asked me why I decided to watch it…it’s an odd reason…all because of a wrestling personality. Paul Heyman went on a Twitter raving about it, and said it was some of the best character development since the Sopranos, and Breaking Bad. Since I’m a “Paul Heyman” guy…I gave it a shot, and I am very glad I did!
On Friday night we joined Doug Benson on stage at the Neptune Theater for the taping of his podcast, "Doug Loves Movies". What an incredible time…not only did we play Beat The Producer (BTP at DLM), but we got to hang with him for a bit on stage. As a fan of his podcast, it was quite the honor…and his audience couldn’t have been cooler to us. It was a blast! I came across this pic on Instagram…thanks to RaveAndReview for posting this!
Here are some pix we took while there…
And for no reason…a cute pic of Lulu.,..

I think I found my new “jam” when it comes to a refreshing beverage. Have you seen those coconut waters called VITA COCO that many people drink? The ones in the cardboard looking bottle? I have never tried one until yesterday….Gamechanger! I had the lemonade flavored drink after I played hockey and I plan on getting more of these.
I was so excited to share this news with my wife…I texted her (she loves VITA COCO so I knew she would be impressed that I was drinking one), and she was drinking one too at the same time, and it was the exact same flavor!
Here is my latest installment of why Jimmy Fallon is killing it as the Tonight Show host! Many people have noticed and joked about how Will Ferrell looks exactly like the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chad Smith. So Jimmy Fallon had them do a drum-off on "The Tonight Show"...and it was very cool! Granted, he was just air-drumming... it was actually Questlove from the Roots (Jimmy’s house band as well) playing.
The best part was at the end, he busted out a cowbell, and the rest of the Red Hot Chili Peppers came out to do "Don't Fear the Reaper" (as a reference to the SNL skit – “More Cowbell!”).
Did you see the Seahawks at the White House yesterday? It was AWESOME! It should have been called “Comedy Central’s Roast Of The Seattle Seahawks!” Man, the President was on fire! He was cracking some great jokes…it was beyond cool to see President Obama talking about guys like Marshawn Lynch, Russell Wilson, Brandon Mebane, Doug Baldwin, and the LOB! Check it out…
It’s another proud moment for Seahawks fans…this has been an unbelievable ride!
Speaking of yesterday’s White House visit…did you catch our interview with Michael Bennett of the Hawks yesterday? He called us while he was in the White House, if you missed it…it was a technical nightmare as his phone kept cutting out…but it was a fun one regardless as he is one cool dude.
So after the interview, I went on the Seahawks Instagram account, and they posted a bunch of great photos from the players at the White House…one of them was a pic of Michael sitting while on the phone…and it was taken right around when we had him on.
I geeked out on that, especially when I read the comments and there were some people commenting..here are a couple comments I saw:
Michael Bennett talking with @bjshea! Great show this morning! Awesome interview! Lol jack bauer!
Tomorrow at 9:15 am -- Michael Bennett from the Seahawks will be joining us!
Michael has a great charity event coming up on May 31st... "Michael Bennett's Champs & Cocktails For A Cause." It’s happening that Saturday afternoon at the Columbia Tower Club, and is a fundraiser for Michael’s charity: Ocean! (fighting obesity through community, education, activity and nutrition). A bunch of Seahawk players will be there...this should be fun…I got my tickets so I hope I will see you there!
So I don’t usually get too serious on my blog, like to post funny videos or pictures or share my random thoughts…but I wanted to quickly address this whole Macklemore “controversy”.
Yesterday word spread that he did something offensive at a show on Friday night…he was wearing a costume that some people thought looked like an offensive Jewish caricature. Here is a video from the performance…
Macklemore claims it was just a "random costume" . . . but Seth Rogan got up in arms about it and tweeted this: “@Macklemore, first you trick people into thinking you're a rapper, now you trick them into thinking you're Jewish?"
Macklemore explained that it was an innocent misunderstanding. He Tweeted, "A fake witch's nose, wig, and beard = random costume. Not my idea of a stereotype of anybody."
Seth didn't buy it. He Tweeted back, "Really?? Because if I told someone to put together an anti-Semitic Jew costume, they'd have that exact shopping list."
Seth…shut up. OK..thank you, that’s my big serious response to all of this.
Everyone that wants to quickly jump the gun and say by him wearing a costume with a wig and a big nose makes him look Jewish and that he is perpetuating a stereotype are shooting themselves in a foot if you ask me…by them seeing it that way, wouldn’t it make them as guilty of furthering this stereotype as well? He never said on stage that he was being “Jewish”…the outfit could easily be viewed as whatever you want…Ringo Star was mentioned, Abe Lincoln, I thought it was a nod to the Digital Underground….
You can read Macklemore’s well thought out response about all of this by clicking HERE!
The worst part of all of this was some people screen shot a moment from his performance when his hand was up and tried to say he was doing a Hitler type of a hand gesture…it’s sickening that people will stop at no lengths to create controversy out of something that wasn’t there.
OK, enough of that…here is a picture of a cute puppy…Lulu! Sorry Seth, she’s not wearing anything in this picture that you can twist into something it’s not!
What a busy weekend! On Saturday we had a great time at the STP-CAST party we had at Trappers Sushi. A bunch of people came out and it was super humbling to meet many people that listen to our silly little podcast!
Big thanks to Carmack for snapping some photo’s at the party…
Today is the 40th anniversarty of the Rubik’s Cube…what better way to celebrate it than to re-share a video from the time that our bud, GregR (107.7 The End) popped into the STP-CAST to show off his Rubiks Cube skills!
On Sunday…Vicky B. and I were the M.C.’s for “Great Strides”, a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Great Strides is the largest national fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Approximately 600 sites across the country participated in a Great Strides this year. It was a great time, and thankfully the weather held up (it was sunny and perfect) for the walk…and when I woke up this morning, I was excited to see this tweet from my bud Robert…
I'm so pumped...yesterday evening I was able to lock in an interview with one of my favorite Seahawks. Next week we are going to have Moses Bread himself (that's his Twitter handle: @mosesbread72) -- Michael Bennett in studio! Not only is Michael a beast on the field, but is hilarious on the microphone...I loved this interview he did on ESPN:
Michael has a great charity event coming up on May 31st... "Michael Bennett's Champs & Cocktails For A Cause." It’s happening that Saturday afternoon at the Columbia Tower Club, and is a fundraiser for Michael’s charity: Ocean! (fighting obesity through community, education, activity and nutrition). A bunch of Seahawk players will be there...this should be fun! Get more info here: http://michaelbennett72.shindigg.com/
To get you pumped...here is an awesome highlight video someone made for Michael...
Another awesome thing happened for me yesterday…if you listen to the STP-CAST, you know that I am obsessed with the Hold Steady, and yesterday my tickets for their show on July 18th showed up in the mail. I tweeted it out there, and the singer of the band, Craig Finn, "favorited" my Tweet. Yes, I know that is a silly thing to be excited about…but for that half of a second it took him to click the “favorite” icon on Twitter…he knew what’s up!
Their new CD, Teeth Dreams, has been in heavy rotation for me… here is one of the songs off of their new disc to give you a taste of my favorite band!
Huge thanks to Xana for sending me this (check her awesome music site/blog: http://blog.xanaland.com/ )…here I am jamming with my buds, The Guessing Game, as we covered “I Believe In Miracles” by the Ramones at the Sunset Tavern last Friday.
Have you seen this crazy video of a cat that saved a four-year-old from a nasty dog attack? This is the first time I have an example of why cats are cool…at least this cat is one cool…uh…cat!
A 4-year-old named Jeremy was playing on his bike in his front yard in Bakersfield, California, and out of nowhere, the neighbor's dog attacked him…latched onto his leg and pulled him off the bike.
Things could have gotten real scary…but thanks to Tara, the family cat. Tara looked like a hockey player…came out of nowhere & full on body checked the dog…it’s incredible! Tara then chased it off, and then checked on Jeremy. Check out the news report of this…
Props to Barrett…he tweeted me a “re-mix” of the video…check it out:
Yesterday something very exciting happened. I saw something that I never thought I would have the opportunity to see. Ladies and gents…
Yes…the GOOGLE MUTHA BLANKIN’ STREET MAPS CAR! How awesome would it be if I show up on the street maps taking this pic of the car? Yes, the simple things in life excite me.
Another thing that excites me…
This was from last week…I went to Out & About Burgers again…got the double cheeseburger, fries, and their special sauce. It’s so damn good. If you are ever in Puyallup, look for the Out & About food truck (14214 Meridian Ave E).
Recently on the STP-CAST, we had a magical moment…while talking to Crazy Cheri, we learned that she wants to marry Russell Wilson…so we did our part to help, and got “Russell” on to chat with her. Here is a snippet from this incredible moment!
Speaking of the STP-CAST, last week we had Aella The Cam Girl in studio, and she had her accordion with her…so she and Crazy Cheri did a “duet” that will disturb you!
Check out the STP-CAST on iTUNES, Stitcher, or HERE!
Have you heard the insanity involving legendary DJ Casey Kasem? Apparently he is missing (something going on between his kids and current wife). Casey is 82 years old and suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease, he can no longer speak, and the kids believe he's on an Indian reservation in Washington state. What? Casey Kasem might be in Puyallup??
Of course the insensitive side of me had to wonder out loud: “How crazy would it be if I saw Casey Kasem selling fireworks in Puyallup?” The second I think I am insensitive…the texts come in to make me not feel alone…here is a couple:
Just passing tulalip. Saw Casey at the outlet mall
You guys should have a contest where is Casey Kasum
I saw a hilarious movie while we were on vacation…it’s called Ride Along…look, I don’t even need to go to Rotten Tomatoes to read that it’s not “fresh”, blah blah…”Stevie Tomatoes” is telling you that it’s funny! It stars Kevin Hart and Ice Cube…it’s On Demand on XFINITY now…check it out!
Over the weekend I got to jump behind the drums with my friends in The Guessing Game. They had their big CD release show at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard, for their CD “Holy Crow” (it’s an awesome, awesome CD)…and I got to jump up on the drums and we covered The Ramones “I Believe In Miracles”…thanks to Thee Ted Smith for taking this pic…
Shawn Smith opened up the night, if you don’t know Shawn…he is one of the best vocalists in the Northwest…he’s the frontman of one of my favorite bands, Brad, and he performed solo…and there was a cool moment during his set. He covered Mother Love Bone’s “Crown Of Thorns” … how cool is this, watching him perform it at the show was former lead guitarist of MLB, Bruce Fairweather, and the person that filmed this was Andy Wood’s (the late singer of Mother Love Bone) girlfriend Xana. Some great vibes going on as he changed up the MLB classic, I really dug his version:
Today was a great day! Growing up…I loved, loved, LOVED Flash Gordon, so meeting Sam J. Jones this morning was a definite highlight!
Plus…he was awesome in Ted, and talk about good timing…Ted happened to show up during the interview!
Sam is in town because of the very cool Sci-Fi Film Festival that Cinerama is doing. Tonight they are screening Flash Gordon, and then Sam will do a Q & A. Get info and tickets at www.cinerama.com.
Not only did I love Flash Gordon for the story, but also for the soundtrack…that film introduced me to the music of Queen. Easily the best movie theme song…
I, of course, had to ask him…of the 4 ways that Freddy Mercury describes him…which line best decribes Flash?
Flash - Savior Of The Universe
Flash - He'll Save Everyone Of Us
Flash - He's A Miracle
Flash - King Of The Impossible
Which did he pick? The last one… King Of The Impossible! I was surprised by that, I would’ve gone with Flash being a miracle!
If you haven’t seen Flash Gordon in a while, here is an interesting refresher…someone edited the whole movie down into about 6 minutes…it’s too funny! If you have never watched Flash…do not watch this, go to Cinerama and watch the full movie please!
We came across an awesome online discussion on Reddit where a user asked this:
What old technology do you prefer over the modern version?
Here are some of most popular answers . . .
1. Paper books over e-books.
2. Popcorn in a pot with oil. It tastes so much better than microwave popcorn.
3. Manual transmission . . . it's more fun to drive and easier to maintain.
4. An old 10-cent Bic razor over an electric razor . . . or a six-blade vibrating razor.
5. Walking around Blockbuster to find a movie instead of flipping indecisively through Netflix over and over.
6. Brewing nice, regular coffee . . . nothing flavored and no pods or Keurig cups.
7. Taking notes with a pen and paper, not on a laptop or a tablet.
8. A manual can opener . . . one that cuts from the side, not through the top. I miss original Nintindo
We got a ton of texts about this…here are some of the good ones…I have to agree with a lot of these:
Neighborhood block parties!
I miss cars without computers! Cars you could actually fix. And cars that looked cool.
I miss cheat codes in video games. They're becoming much less common and that makes me sad.
I miss the old flip cell phones
I miss photo albums
Thomas Guide over navigation or mapquest, any day!
I miss old telephone s. Cell phones make u to accessible and if u dont respond u get questoned. Trucker rob
I miss having perky boobs
I miss the soda pop, Surge.
I miss Dial Up, yes, back then, the internet took so long to work, it was a bother to use. Now, its too easy to log on & veg out. I miss my neighbors.
I miss the answering machine. If I wasn't home I didn't talk to you.
I miss when there wasnt a facebook and tweeter when people actually called asking how you are and not just looking at your status updates
I miss not worrying what's in my food. You just ate it and grew up awesome.... like myself. Painterguy D
