Today I write this blog with a bit of a heavy heart. For some reason it seems like family deaths and sad news was all around the last couple of days. A girl I grew up with and knew her family as she and her family were friends with my family as well Mother passed away just last week. I hear today of sad news of another friend of mine, who's Father just passed on Sunday. On The Megacast today Steve and I talked with our buddy Levi Lyon from Lyon Pride Music (who also has awesome party busses) and Levi's brother was one of the firefighters injured in the wild fires last week over in eastern Washington. Sadly though his brother who was badly injured was the only survivor out of four men who were caught on a hill when the wind changed. His brother who was about to become a Police officer just went to fight the fires as a volunteer just to help out and ends up getting seriously injured. Today also saw yet more senseless gun violence as a ex co-worker was mad about some things gunned down a TV reporter on the air and the camera man. Just a overall sad morning of news and serious subjects today. I feel for all these situations and while all different they all remind us that life is precious and can be gone at any time. Sometimes on days like today I would just remind you to take a look at what is important in your life. Life is a lot of things and sometimes I get so wrapped up in my own stuff that I forget to look at the big picture. As much as I am writing and telling others to look at what is important I am most definitely reminding myself as well
Yesterday was the 2015 version of Pain in the grass and man was it fun. First off it sold out and the crowd that was there was ready to party and have fun even on a Sunday. We had two stages and the second century stage was live man. It was fun going over there and seeing some up and coming bands that close. It was also cool that you could be just strolling by with a beer and catch a set of live music. The weather was warmer and the sun was out as well. I will try to put into words but it is hard the feeling I had yesterday. First off signing autographs and taking pictures with people never get's old to me. I am always happy to do and frankly it is a awesome feeling when someone ask you for a autograph or picture. We have worked on KISW for ten years and it never stops amazing me how awesome the fans of the Rock are. Standing on stage in front of a sold out white river and hearing all the love from the crowd was just awesome. Awesome on a level that is hard to explain but it just feels great. The reason it feels so good is because of you guys. Yes you are the ones that pay for the tickets and show up to all the events. You guys are the reason those events are so much fun. I know you will hear it a lot on the station but I just want you guys to know how much it means to all of us and personally I just want to say thank you.
I feel like some songs are great for different times of the year. Now of cores Christmas music is great for that season but I think some songs are seasonal without trying to be. I am not sure why or what it is that makes a great summer song but you know it when you hear it. I am not even sure I have songs that go with all the seasons but I for damn sure do believe that some are for the summer. I feel like a summer song is one that sounds great cruising down the road on a road trip or just sitting around by a pool or body of water. Summer songs seem to be more fun and more about hanging out and enjoying the sun. Photograph by Def Leoppard is one that comes to mind right away. That song makes me want to be on a boat with some shades on and cold beer in my hand. Some summer songs also make hanging out in a group a better thing. Some songs just seem better in a group. I am not a big Bon Jovi fan but I challenge you to sing that song loudly with a group of friends and not have fun. I am talking about rock here in this blog but clearly all types of music have their summer songs. I think just a couple of summers ago blurred lines was clearly the song of that summer. I am sure that bands think about this stuff and release songs when they think the time is right. I also think there has to be time when people make a song and just know that that is going to be their summer hit. In my mind the bands makes a song then just look at each other like that is it right there man, that's our summer banger. I am sure that is how it works, if I had a band that is how I would do it. Enjoy the summer and the summer hits my friends
Jon Steward is done with The Daily Show after tonight as it is his final show. The fact that he is done now with his show got me thinking about change. Change is constant in our lives and we cannot avoid it and in my mind how you deal with the change with defy who you are as a person. Some people don't like change and want things to stay the same. I for one had to learn the hard way that change happens and I was not willing to change for years, I am a hardheaded in that way. I always thought as well that it was just my fear of me changing but over time I also realized that it was my fear of what others thought of my change that I feared. See in some way it was easy to stay in my ways and some of my bad habits because that is how people know I said to myself. I without even realizing it was using others as yet another excuse not to do more. Using this excuse to be a dumbass and using this excuse to make myself feel ok for some of the dumb things I was still doing. It was a more advanced style of self sabotage. The crazy thing is that in the last few years as I changed things people still liked me, people still wanted to be friends. Hell if anything I found a whole new group of cool people who were making great strides in their lives and now I could hang with them because they saw the real effort I was putting it. I should say that there is still plenty of times to be a fun loving guy who is just cutting loose but now I can pick and choose those times as apposed to just doing it to do it. Change man, it's a powerful thing and you are the only who can make yourself change. Have a great weekend everyone
So as Jon Steward finishes his run with The Daily Show this week I have a lot of thoughts. Number one is I remember when he took over that show and it seemed like it might not be the same and could he do a good job. I think we know how that work out which is it worked out very well. When he took over that show it seemed less important then it does now. See when the show started we still had news on TV and the news channels like FOX and CNN talked about news whereas these days they both only promote a agenda that helps their side while calling it news. I really believe that is how The Daily Show turned into something more than just a comic show that talked some politics. For my taste I don't really care which side you are on the political culture in our country has gotten crazy and frankly kind of silly. Jon is and has always been a funny man but I think in these times it was great for his show to just point out the dumb things that happen in politics on both sides. Along with the more important political issues The Daily Show also did a great job of being funny. It also gave us some of the greatest and funniest people we know today who started out as correspondents on the show. Jon did a great job with the show during his time and I think he leaves at a good time to go peruse other things. I will miss him like most when he is gone but a huge thank you for all the years of entertainment Jon
I love to blog about weather because I really like weather and trying to predict it. If I could choose another profession outside of radio it would definitely be the weather man for some local channel somewhere. My big question is world I like to work in a place like San Diego where the weather is almost always the same or work somewhere the weather is different all the time. I like the idea of predicting a big snow storm and telling kids they have the next day off of school. When I was a kid growing up in Maryland I used to love watching the weather when it came to snow storms. It is probably why I still watch the weather. I used to like the old weather channel which was just radar and some stats. My brother Chris and I always took pride in knowing how big or small the snow totals would be for a specific storm. I never realized how much I liked weather until a few years ago at a festival I explained to my buddy why the thunderstorms that night were going to be big and he looked at me like how do you know that? This weekend the heat and sun return to the Pacific Northwest, put on that sunscreen and drink water. Clearly a few other cold beverages is in my plans as well but just make sure you get some water and sunscreen. Waking up hung over and sunburned sucks.
I have titled this blog Arena Football because tomorrow everyone on The Men's Room and our boy Veggie Dog are headed to Spokane to watch the Shock play. I have been to a lot of sporting events but never arena football. I am excited to watch the game and have some beers but can't lie I am really pumped to meet the mascot Shox the Fox. Shox because famous, well I should say even more famous in just the last month as he had a off moment and got involved in a play in the end zone. Now some have been quick to criticize Shox, but you have to remember he can't see so well in there and mistakes happen. I believe that Shox is a fine maybe even world class mascot and a smart mascot knows to turn this negative into a positive. While it was embarrassing at the time I trust that Shox has turn this into a learning opportunity. Shox will not be making this mistake again and he will better for having this have happened. As for the football on the field I am fired up to see the Shock beat up on Portland. See no matter what the sport is I am always excited to see a Portland team lose.
So this time of year the sports season kind of lags a bit in the fact it is the dog days of summer for baseball as well as for the MLS season. Golf is in full swing but even with golf the majors that everyone really cares about the most have already happened. Yes I understand the PGA championship is a major but it does not hold the same prestige as the Masters, US Open and British Open. Part of the summer slow is also is just gets warm out and people themselves are not doing as much. People take vacations and just chill out when it gets hot out. This time of year is also a time for fans to dig in and stick it out. Baseball fans know that this time of year is long on the players but long on the fans as well so you have to stay in it fans. Soccer fans and especially Sounders fans have been going through a terrible time of late and just can't seem to find a win anywhere. The summertime swing in both these sports can be a test of will's for both players and fans alike but I trust in the fans and the teams. I am sticking by my theory that the Mainers will make the postseason and the Sounders will get back on track when players return and this funk is out of the boys. So have a cold drink and remember that these long summer days sometimes are very telling to the rest of the season. Support your M's and support your Sounders FC
Tomorrow is Redfest and I am excited to say the least. I have just got done with a long period of not drinking and I am looking forward to drinking beers with you all. I know this year the weather will be awesome and sunny. Hell it might even be a little too warm for some of us Seattle people. I enjoy outdoor drinking at multiple things, credit to Miles for the "outdoor drinking". My brother and I are seasoned tailgaters so outdoor drinking is a old passion. The thing about drinking outdoors in a parking lot is the different factor, you don't usually get to drink like that in a spot like that and listen to live bands. I love college football but in the end I might just like tailgating college football even more then some of the games I have been to myself. I also enjoy drinking beers on a golf cores which is again just a different environment to do some quality drinking outdoors. Sunshine and beers are a great mix but can also be a trouble mix so I would warn you to be safe out there tomorrow at Redfest and make sure you get some water in you as well as those tasty beers. There is a Sounders match tomorrow and I hope at least a few people are using Redfest as their pregame warm up for the match. I will be skipping the match tomorrow myself but hope to some Sounders fans in attendance. Sun, fun and you and me, lets do this
So it is the middle of July and how is your new years resolution going? I ask this because as it is The Year Of The Hustle as we have deemed it on Thee Podcast and I know I have gotten to some points where I have to remind myself the hustle is year long. I have accomplished many things already this year but I can't get comfortable and lazy because I made a promise to be on point all year. People always have different goals for the year and I hope you are staying on top of them. If you have fallen off a bit then maybe this mid summer check in is the time to get back on the path. Also remember that some goals are personal and don't have to be huge. It can be very small simple steps to get you to the next goal. Some people are always going to give you a hard time and it is tough but in time you will learn to brush it off because they are just upset they are not reaching some goal they set. If someone gives you crap about a food or drink choice just remember that this is your journey and not theirs. Change is constant and how you react to it shows what kid of person you are but others sometime won't like your change and that's ok. The real people you want in your life are like me, they are proud of you for making these positive changes and can't wait to see the awesome person you are becoming. Year Of The Hustle is real ya'll stay positive and enjoy it
