The Week In Metal : June 16th - June 22nd

Hello again Northwest Metal Tribe! In an attempt to keep everyone updated on all the Metal Shop goings-on, and all the behind the scenes madness here on the show, we've decided to try somehting a little new. This is the first entry of a new feature here on the Metal Shop blog called "This Week In Metal." We will go into more detail about some of the topics we talk about on the show, mentioning some metal news, giving wrap ups of some awesome shows and chatting a bit about some bands that should be on your radar.

Black Breath: Notorious Neck Crushers
First off, I just gotta say, I have a wicked f***n bangover right now and it's all due to the excessive amounts of radness brought forth by Seattle wrecking crew Black Breath (pictured above) at the Southern Lord showcase last night at El Corazon. I showed up just in time to check out Burning Love, a righteous rock n roll/punk/hardcore band fronted by Chris who used to be in Cursed. They were super badass. Next up was Martyrdod, a group of Swedes who dished up a wicked serving of crust-caked punk n roll, d-beat style. My ears were already ringing by the time the almighty Black Breath came on, and believe me, it only got worst (aka better) from there. As always, Black Breath straight up killed it, raging forth with their signature Entombed-esque buzzsaw guitar sound. Thank you Black Breath. I will be sending you my chiropractor's bill asap.

Queensyche says bye bye to Geoff
By now you've probably already heard that longtime Northwest prog metallers Queensryche have parted ways with frontman Geoff Tate as of....today. I can't really say it was much of a surprise, though. Following some inner-turmoil and infighting, the band regrouped a couple weeks back as Rising West, a self-cover band that featured all remaining members, minus Geoff. From here on out, it looks like the band will be heading in a bit more of their classic, and much more metal direction. Is the world ready for Queen Of The Reich Part 2? One can only hope....

Mama Said Knock You Out: Northwest Knock Out This Weekend!
This past weekend, Tacoma death metal band Deathbed Confessions were our special guest in the studio to help us give away tickets for a suuuuuper badass three-day festival going on this weekend in the 253! All weekend long, Hell's Kitchen will be rocked by more than 30 local bands including I Declare War, Where The Dead Are, Through Darker Tides, Clockwork Theory, Burning Twilight, Envisionist and of course Deathbed Confessions. The festivities kick off this Friday at 5 pm and rage onward for three days straight. See ya'll in the south end!

Mr. Pettibone Schools Us On NWHC
This Saturday, ex-Himsa and current Heiress vocalist John Pettibone will be in the studio chatting with us about the upcoming reunion/last show ever of the first band he ever sang for, one of the Northwest's very first hardcore bands, Undertow. They will be playing with Clevo metalcore greats Integrity and Tacoma mathcore band Harkonen on June 30th at Neumo's. Class will be in session as Mr. Pettibone schools us with a little history lesson about Northwest hardcore. Make sure you take notes...

Dying Fetus Tonight
Right now, I'm drinking a fat ass energy drink and gearing up for a night of badassery with Dying Fetus, Six Feet Under and Revocation down at Studio Seven. If you're reading this today (Wednesday, June 20th), make sure you get off your tookus and head over to see them as well, and make sure you show up early for local shredders Thou Shall Kill. I had the pleasure of sitting in on one of their most recent practices and all I gotta say is that their new material seriously rips!

And Now It's Time For Me To Rock
Pardon me, I have a little listening to do...this little ol' thing just showed up in the mail....

OHHHHHHHHHHHHH SNAP! Time to get heavy!
Until next time, HORNS UP!
