Last Second Shot 5/17/12

So the NBA and the NHL are in playoffs right now and a lot is made of LeBron James and the fact he did not take the last shot in a game the other night. Now I am not going to sit here and say that I like LeBron is the most clutch player in the world but I also don't think he is the worst. Does every final shot have to hit by the star of the team. I remember the shots Jordan made but do I really remember the ones he missed and the end of games?

Here is the deal is that I do think LeBron is a great player but I do think at some point he is in his own head at the end of games. He is not doubt the MVP this year and he is a great player but I am not sure I want him taking the final shot. On the other end of things is Kevin Durant who to me is a natural leader and clutch shooter. Here is the deal and difference between the two guys. KD has been in Oklahoma City the last two summers making his team better and running drills with them. KD also said last night in the press conference that when its time to hit that final shot he wants it. He said what you want to hear that he wants to take that shot and if he misses he will take that shot again at the end of the game because he has that confidence. LeBron just seems to disappear when the game is in the final min. Maybe at this point I should also point out I am a Kevin Durant fan and have been for a while and just really wish he was doing all this from Seattle still where I live. Also KD is a P.G. county boy like myself so I got to love the guy.

Sun and fun 5/10/12

I have been all about the sun in the last week. First off I went to Southern California which I will be calling SoCal the rest of the blog because I don't want to type the whole word every time. So I am down in SoCal and it was awesome. I really liked it down there and at some point will be living there. I was not in LA so I can't say I like LA but Dana Point and San Clemente are awesome. Oh I also hit up Laguna Beach on day and it was beautiful. Pricy but damn nice and I liked the vibe down there as well. I am sure this is pissing off everyone here in Seattle since everyone seems to hate people from SoCal but I got you guys from the south.

Now I come to Seattle on Sunday and its sunny and warm. When I was down in SoCal I relized I might like the sun more than I let on. I was so happy to be sitting in the sun down there and now the sun has come back up north with me. Yes Seattle please thank me for the sun. If fact it is so nice outside why am I sitting here writing a blog? You know this blog is about sun and fun so I am going to fire up the grill at my house and enjoy soak up some rays bah. As always you can get at me off hours @TheeTedSmith on Twitter

Cartoons 5/1/12

Cartoons seem like something that was just for kids for a long time but in the last 20 years they have become for everyone. It's funny because cartoons are a easy way for kids to get into a show because they are fun to look at. Over time they have become for adults as well in many ways also. You might not think about it but it is crazy how much cartoons have a effect of adults now.
Now it might be a simple as going to pick a movie that the whole family might like. People forget how different Shrek was and funny. These days you can see all kinds of cartoons that are for adults as well kids but its not just only that. Think about the fact that some of the only honest social commentary you get is from cartoons. Shows like South Park and Family Guy do a good job of talking about what is going on. Clearly South Park is better at this since the show is so current. Family guy though is a real funny show and talks about real things going on in the world as well. When you get to cable the cartoons are endless is seems. Cartoon network has a whole time block just for you grown ups called Adult Swim. I cant speak to much on the Simpsons since I don't really watch it that often. I guess the point of this blog is that last night I was watching some cartoons and it hit me how powerful they are. I also think it is great how you can watch a cartoon with your kids or if you stay up later you can watch one that just for you the grown up. Long live cartoons and if you got a sec let me know what your favorite one is

The good and the bad 4/18/12
altText

TV can be a lot of things to me. A lot of times TV is nothing more than a time waster or something in the background. There are also shows you can watch that can teach you things. I know some people that hate TV and think it is the evil of all evil's. I do agree that watching too much of it is probably not great for you but then again everything in moderation is a solid way to live. I think too much of anything is a bad idea.

The reason I am writing this blog about the good and bad on TV are two different shows that are both on TV. To me one show ask questions and makes you thing about stuff and question things and that show is Frontline on PBS. Now on the other end of the spectrum is a show called basketball wives on VH1. First off the word wives in the title is BS because they are all ex's. Can you imagine your ex wife of girlfriend being on TV because she used to date you. The only thing more crazy than this show is that people watch it. Look I love some mindless TV and just zone out but this show is just awful. The 20 mins I spent watching it are time I will never get back but you have to really annoying to make me not even watch one whole show. I have not been this turned off from a show since the Kardashian's got a show. The worst part about this show is it is just some money and attention starved girls trying to cash in on some dude they used to date. Here is idea get good at something and people will give you that attention you want.

TV also to me is a window into how other people do things. I love sports and for me live sports on TV are what I watch the most. I like the idea that if I am up on a Saturday morning watching the Arsenal play a soccer game in England that there are people all over the world watching them just like I am. We are all different people from different parts off the world but through live sports on TV we are all one when we jump for joy as RVP scores again to win a big game. For college football it is great to see a Maryland football on TV because then I am there with my family and friends watching them lose again because well it's Maryland football and they lose a lot. I am getting way off topic here but I guess my point is TV can be both good and bad depending on what you want to watch. When you read this keep in mind I am a 31 year old man that lives alone so I can watch what I want when I want. I feel bad for dudes that have to sit through bad shows that are not there choice. I am going to do a radio show and keep trying to get famous so a ex of mine can be on a show one day.....

Baseball 4/13/12
altText
Baseball season is here and I can't lie I am not the biggest baseball fan these days but still enjoy the sport. It's kind of funny I don't watch baseball as much as I used to since it was the sport I played the most as a kid. I know more about baseball than any other sport as well. I can tell you where just about every guy should be on any given play. I still do get excited about a nice sac fly or well place steal as well.
The reason today I am writing about baseball is because tonight I am going to the Mariners home opener. Going to a baseball game is different because there is a lot of time to sit and enjoy a soda or a beer. You can sit back watch a few innings and have a hot dog. I feel like the hot dog is the baseball standard. They serve them at all sporting event but it goes best with baseball. Another great thing about going to a baseball game is you get to keep the ball if you catch one. I seen the basketball go into the stands a few times but they don't let you keep it. It would be cool if you could keep the balls from other sports. I have a plan with the guys I sit with at the Sounders FC matches that if a ball comes into our section it is important for all of us to touch it before we give it back. Sorry I got a little off track there. I also come from a long line of Smiths and the Smith boys know some baseball. My Dad coached me, my uncle Tim coached against me and now his son my cousin Tom is coaching his son in t-ball. Hell I even coached when I lived in back east. Man all I want to go play baseball right now errrrr I mean go watch it and drink a beer.

The good life 4/12/12
altText
The sun has been out this week and it was out last weekend and so was I. It always blows me away how when the sun does come out here in the Northwest it turns into sun worship. I did not understand it the first few years I was out here but I sure as hell get it now. As soon as the bright sunny sun shows up it is time to get out there and do some things and for a guy like me it means it is time to enjoy the good life.
The good life can be a lot of things to a lot of different people. For one the good life might be at a certain event or maybe out in the woods shooting some kind of animal. The good life could also just living in a great place with a great view. Let me tell you now what I consider the good life. Last weekend was a prime example to me of the good life. I am a single guy with a good job so clearly I get to do and live stuff that some people can't because they have more cost than I do. Friday night we had the 5th 53rd annual Alcohol of fame down in Tacoma and that was awesome. I got to meet a ton of cool people and have some drinks with them. I got up early on Saturday and watched some soccer and then I took my first hot tub of the day. Yeah to me the good life has a few components but rest assure that hot tubs is a big one. So after the first hot tub of the day and a quick dip in the pool at my place I got ready to go to buddy Matt's Birthday party. I know what your saying how long does it take me to get ready and the answer is not long but I had to make sausage dip as well. When living the good life sausage dip is important as well. The party was great with tons of food and drink and good company. Shout out to "TOP DOG". Later on in the night we had a bonfire and then the best way to end any night with a outdoor hot tub. The wind over your head and a couple buddies and some beers.
Man this is the longest blog in a while just to talk about the good life. The next morning I got up and had some homemade coffee cake and breakfast casserole that was on point. Then it was time to start amping up the good life again with a few lawn games. Started with a nice little kick about with a couple guys and a soccer ball that led to some other games involving balls and these things that were like plastic lacrosse stick. What is next after that you ask? Its now time for another outdoor hot tub and hanging. See to me the good life is simple. Good company, good food, cold drinks and hot tubs. OK the hot tub part is not simple but always great. How do you live the good life? As always get at me on twitter @TheeTedSmith

Seattle Rock Day 4/5/12
altText

Hello Seattle!!!!!!!! So today on the station it was Seattle Rock Day. Now you might be asking yourself when did Seattle Rock Day start and the answer is last year we at KISW started it. Now the basic idea is a day with just Seattle rock bands all day long. I have to tell you growing up in the Washington DC area I was not familiar with rock music and especially the Seattle scene. Now that I have been in Seattle for 7 years I have come to really love some of the bands.

Now I would like to run down some songs and bands I like from Seattle. First off I knew of Nirvana and Soundgarden and Alice in Chains but I really only knew one of two big hits. Since I have been here Alice was the first band that got me with It ant like that. Once I figured out I like them I wore out a Dirt CD and Facelift. By the way I have seen AIC in concert now 5 times. The next band I went on a kick with was Mother Love Bone and I still wear out that CD. I even have a shirt from that band and saw all the original members minus Andrew Wood last year at the Showbox market. Side note I love the Showbox market. So now its been a couple years and I got to meet the guys from Soundgarden and I realized I did not too much of their music. Local legend Jeff Gilbert gave me a great CD with his favorite Soundgarden songs and that's when I fell in love with that band and Slaves and Bulldozers was the song that got me. So I guess the point of the blog today is that I know really really like a lot of the Seattle Rock scene. I can't leave Jimmy off this post and I have yet to even talk about Mad Season or Mud Honey or well this could go on for a while. Sir Mix A Lot is a Seattle guy and today I even found out the great Kenny Loggins is from Bellingham. God is there no end to musical talent in this state....

Final Four Weekend 3/30/12
altText

This week I got a bad flu and missed a couple days of work. Number one I do not like to sick days so I was not happy about that but then on the other side I also do not like to be that sick. I like to think I know my body and I was scared that it was going to get worse and get pneumonia. I had it a couple years ago so I am always worried if I don't take care of myself when sick I will get it again. The point of this is that I am going to lay low this weekend and stay in the house and watch sports and a great weekend to do it.

First on Saturday we have the Final Four games. Now I am not the biggest college hoops fan the last couple of years but I enjoy March Madness and the Final Four. I am very much looking forward to the first match-up this weekend which is Kentucky VS Louisville. Its a huge rivalry game already and then you toss on top that it is for a birth in the National Championship game. If that is not enough of a reason to watch this game the two coaches don't really like each other and have not for years. It should be a great game and a exciting match up. The second game is between Ohio St. and Kansas. I don't really have too much passion for either team but for some reason I am just not a Ohio St. fan so I will be Rock, Chalk, Jayhawks for the second game. I plan on watching these two games at a bar and have a couple beers and then its back to my couch for the Sounders FC match. I am a season ticket holder but am skipping this one since I was sick all week. I figure sitting out in the rain and cold might be the best call in the world. Either way I have a nice little Saturday planned and hope you have a great weekend as well.

NCAA Basketball 3/23/12
altText
Sun is back and I am stoked. Last weekend was a awesome one and this weekend is shaping up to be a good one as well. Tonight there is another home match for our Seattle Sounders FC and I am happy to come into the office and see Thrill, Ben, Castle, And Brian Thorpe from promotions all in their Sounders gear today. I am so excited as well because I have a whole group of guys I don't see much outside of going to games with them and it is always fun with those guys. Either way tonight will be fun and then get set for some sun tomorrow and hoops.
So this blog may make you mad at me and say Ted what is your problem man? Here is the deal with March Madness for me this year is I did not fill out a bracket. I never thought of the repercussions of this grave mistake. As I have watched NCAA basketball games over the last couple weeks I realize without the bracket I have not been as into the games I usually am. This brings me to a good point that even if you don't bet money on the bracket it is good to fill one out. I was shocked by some of the upset's but real shocked when I found out what some teams were ranked. The point is that I am lost this tournament and it is no one fault except myself. I often make mistakes but this was a huge one and I am sorry. I will try to do better next year. Go Sounders

St.Paddy's Day 3/19/12
altText
I know I often start these blogs talking about the weather but weekend was another crazy one and while it seems the whole country is seeing spring old man winter will not let us go. As a guy that has lived here for seven years I know that the rain sticks around for a while but its damn cold out there. Now on Saturday when I got up it was snowing again. Even with all this crazy weather it was still a great weekend with a lot of fun stuff to do.
So last Thursday my Sister got into town with her boyfriend Pat. Side note Pat is also a DeMATHA guy so that's a huge plus in his corner. Anyhow I took a vacation day on Friday and we went to eat in the Space needle. It was a great afternoon and evening as I tried to show them that when the sun comes out here in Seattle it is time for sitting outside no matter what the temperature is. Having people in town is a reason to go up in the needle and I always forget unless I go up to the top just how cool it is and since it was Friday it was nice outside to boot. Saturday was going to be huge day number one because the Sounders FC had the first regular season game at home and it was St.Paddy's day. People love to get drunk on St.Paddy's day and that is a known fact. My Sister cooked some corned beef that was very good and they we hit some bars in the afternoon. As we walked from Belltown down to stadium areas I saw a bunch of drunk people having a grand old time. I saw a lot of green and rave green. The game was great as the Sounders took the game by a 3-1 victory. After the game we all went home and feel asleep quickly if you know what I am saying and I think you do. So I hope your weekend was good as well and stay warm since it is cold outside still.
