BJ'S BLOG 01/21/16 "Academy Awards"

January 21, 2016

Here’s something potentially big from the entertainment pages, gang:

Jada Pinkett-Smith and Spike Lee are boycotting the Oscars, due to the lack of African-American nominees for this year’s awards. The news broke over the recent Martin Luther King Day holiday, and now comedian Chris Rock is facing pressure from the black community to step down as host of the show.

I’m struggling with this one, folks. It’s just a stupid awards show! Jada and Spike have feathered their beds with movie profits, so I guess I find it hard to get behind a couple of upset millionaires.

Diversity IS a good thing, but does anyone really believe that nominees were chosen (or excluded) because of their ethnicity? Do the judges only ever “get it right” when everyone’s happy?

And how would we fix this, anyway? Do the judges have to watch all of the eligible movies, but only make nominations that fit within set criteria, checking all the boxes to make sure they’ve represented every specific group? That’s not an award based on merit; that’s meeting a quota.

Jada and Spike…why not speak up and tell the Academy what you want, work to change that system from the inside, and focus your outrage on deeper causes? Does boycotting the Oscars really accomplish anything for equality?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, fellow Rock-A-Holics.
