BJ'S BLOG 04/05/16 "A Modern Day Bible Story"

April 4, 2016

Today's blog comes from one of my mentors, Dan Sanders:

When I was in high school, I had a great English teacher. Mr. Quinn was a drunk Irishman and a frustrated actor with a great voice, and he loved to read to us, especially from Shakespeare (or as the cool kids liked to say, Willie Shake). One assignment I remember was to choose a Shakespeare play and unravel it, finding new meaning or questions that had been left unanswered. I picked Macbeth. In the backstage world of theater, some believe that play is cursed and will not say the title out loud, calling it instead “the Scottish Play.”

As some of you might have guessed, I have a very fertile imagination, and just the other night it occurred to me that life, like love, can be as the Pointer Sisters only country song says—just a “Fairytale.” Or is it?

First let me say it's very sad that a relatively few fanatics, involved in religion, politics, social media, news, and so on, determine what we hear, what we know, and worst of all what we believe, spewing forth evil interpretations conceived in their own crazed minds. Evil walks the earth—give it any name you want from greed to lunacy—not quietly but screaming and carrying a very big stick. It reeks of something that is terrible, dreadful, awful, grim, and is profoundly immoral and malevolent. It’s easy to dismiss it as “oh, it's that religion” or “them damn Republicans (or Democrats)” rather than trying to discern the true evil, and when we do that, evil wins another round.

So as I was cogitating away one sleepless night, it occurred to me that if evil can take on a human form and walk the earth, good could do the same thing. Here we are in the middle of a presidential campaign with the bad King—the coin counter—opposing the good hippie Jew. I can imagine writing a modern day bible story with that scenario. I just hope it wouldn’t take over 2000 years for the coin-counting King to lose the battle.

Maybe one of the three witches from Macbeth knows what’s in the podcast. I know there will be some evil (a.k.a., rock and roll) music news and a rock and roll timeline. Join me on the shores of Rambling Harbor.
