Jabroni Journal: Happy 3/16 !
National Stone Cold Day
Over the past few years, March 16th has become a bit of a global holiday for wrestling fans. Get it, 3/16? For those unfamiliar with what 3/16 symbolizes, let’s take a trip down memory lane.
On June 23rd, 1996 Stone Cold Steve Austin cemented his spot in the annals of pro wrestling history when he cut a scathing promo on the man he just beat in the center of the ring – Jake the Snake Roberts. Due to the fact that Jake had been touted as a born-again Christian by the announcers during this short comeback, Austin decided to throw shade at the religious iconography.
“Talk about your Psalms, talk about John 3:16 - AUSTIN 3:16 SAYS I JUST WHIPPED YOUR ASS.”
Despite being considered a vicious heel (bad guy) at the time, the next night on Monday Night Raw, Austin 3:16 signs already started popping up in the crowd. From there, it caught fire.
The next 7 years were a whirlwind of stone cold stunners, middle fingers, cracked beers, and black t-shirts. Steve Austin led the charge for the “Attitude Era” and was the blue collar hero of the late 90’s that kept the WWE alive at a time when they were neck and neck with the rival WCW.
Today, Stone Cold Steve Austin is a retired pro wrestler, podcaster, hunter, reality show host and overall badass. In short, he is a damn national treasure and for that alone, he deserves his own holiday.
Crack a beer, watch these classic Stone Cold moments and give your friend a stunner. And that’s the bottom line……cuz Stone Cold said so!
