NAMM - Media Day 1.18.17 Anaheim, CA

NAMM - Media Day 1.18.17 Anaheim, CA

January 18, 2017

It's that time of the year again when me and Stephanie head down to the usually sunny Anaheim, CA and cover the worlds biggest music trade show NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants.
For those that have been to one of the decades long NAMM shows, you know what I mean when it's a total sensory and visual overload of everything music from around the world. Instruments, software, education, meet & greets, concerts, demonstrations and the opportunity to bump elbows with legends of music walking around. NAMM.org explains itself as "not-for-profit association that promotes the pleasures and benefits of making music and strengthens the $17 billion global music products industry. Our association — and our trade shows — serve as a hub for people wanting to seek out the newest innovations in musical products, recording technology, sound and lighting. NAMM's activities and programs are designed to promote music making to people of all ages."

Held at the Anaheim Convention Center, imagine over 100,000 attendees from over 120 countries walking the convention floors with over 800,000 + square feet in the Anaheim Convention Center , more than 1750 vendors representing over 5000 brands! It's huge and right now the convention center is adding on another 200,000 square feet. NAMM trade shows are restricted to owners, suppliers, employees, endorsed artists, guests of NAMM member companies and us approved media outlets approved to cover events.

So before the first day of NAMM, there's Media Day. A special little few hours dedicated to us to have a little more one on one time with participating vendors that chose to setup mini displays of their product or services.
So me and Stephanie tackle this opportunity each year and see if there's (usually is) cool new items about to spring on the music world. Of the around 25 companies that participated here's our quick overview of a few stand-out products that caught our eyes or ears.

Let's start with Stephanie's notes.

The Sensel Morph was Stef's favorite product of the day. It's a large trackpad that has different overlays that it recognizes. The cool part is you can hook up multiple morphs and have a keyboard on 1, drumpad on another or even hook 4 up and have the keyboard overlay on all four of them to make a full sized keyboard! It recognizes different overlays immediately.

Price point for the Morph is $249 and includes 1 overlay. Other overlays are $25 each.

The Deering Banjo company showed us their new 6 string banjo. What's really cool and design catching is it's designed to be played more like a guitar.

The one product that got both our attention was the ridiculously gorgeous gemstone topped guitars from Zerberus. The Chronos model comes topped with Amethyst, Tiger's Eye, Aventureine and Onyx. The Amethyst on hand was simply stunning.

Ok, so I had a couple products I wanted to inform you all that were cool and one confusing. Let's just start off the confusing one. An Ozzy harmonica? I had to double take walking past the Hohner table. Why do I kinda cringe and not think that's so metal and kinda a cash money deal. Maybe I'm wrong and harmonica players around the globe will flock to this new product featuring the Prince of Darkness branding but the "Hardest Rocking Harmonica" theme cracked me up. More info here to those interested in this what I think will be a big fan collectable.

Okay, now lets get to the real deals. The Varius violin is the world's first concert electric violin created by 3D-printing technology. Printed as a single piece I was blown away from its sound and it virtually weighed nothing. Check out this AC/DC sample video of this violin.

Check out how this violin is made in France: https://www.3d-varius.com/how-its-made

For me the product of innovation comes from Somnium - introducing the world's first totally reconfigurable guitar! Yes you can swap the look, the fretboards, the bridge, the pickups with easy interlocking components!
So if your looking for a guitar you can custom to your likes, easily transportable and change the sound, shape and configuration in a flash this is it! www.somniumguitars.com

Okay Day #1 of NAMM tomorrow. Watch for our blogs reports from each day next week. No time when your running around from 9am-1am each night from NAMM to night shows. Gotta sleep right? HA!
