Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Baker Gets BLASTED!

February 6, 2017

POWERED BY VISIT BEND

I am SO happy to be hitting the hill on a regular basis this ski season. After a few sad winters just a couple years back, 2016-2017's snowfall almost makes me forget about those snowless seasons. Almost.

I also need to take a minute to show off my new Ziggy Stardust ski mask. This bad boy arrived Friday, just in time for a weekend debut!

Got my new #ZiggyStardust ski mask just in time to hit Mt Baker tomorrow!

Saturday was another incredible day at Mt. Baker, and one of the busier days we have seen this season. And for good reason! We kidnapped my best friend's husband, Jeff, and by the time we started the ascent to Baker on Saturday morning, they were reporting 11" in the past 12 hours, and 20" in the past 24. It did make for some dicey road conditions just outside Bellingham and all the way to the summit. Not only that, but it snowed CONSTANTLY the entire time we were there!

Boys day at @therealmtbakerskiarea. Oh, and me, too.

We broke for lunch in the Raven's Hut at mid-mountain, where we enjoyed fabulous bacon cheeseburgers, hand-cut fries and frosty victory beers while watching the snow fall.

After we battled visibility toward the end of the of the afternoon, we called it a day and adhered to our tradition of stopping at Graham's Store in Glacier for ice cream and road snacks for the ride home.

The snow has continued to fall hard on East 542, so hard that the highway had to be closed today, and unfortunately Baker is unable to operate as a result. The road crews are on it, working diligently to open the highway for obsessive powder hounds that can't wait to get another taste of the fluffy good stuff! My plan is to get back up this Sunday for more epic S curves at my favorite mountain!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
