Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Conquering the Bend Ale Trail

Stop #1 - Deschutes Brewery

November 7, 2016

POWERED BY VISIT BEND

This weekend I was lucky enough to embark on the Bend Ale Trail, something I have wanted to do for a LONG time. With more breweries per capita than any other city in Oregon (I heard someone say 29!!), Bend may very well be heaven on earth. The Bend Ale Trail gives you the opportunity to explore multiple craft breweries in a single afternoon or over the course of a weekend, and they even have an app so you can stamp each one you visit!

First off, I have to give a big shout out to Nate from Visit Bend for coordinating our afternoon of brewery-hopping, and to Bend Brew Bus driver Jared for getting us safely from stop to stop all afternoon! This is definitely the way to travel when you're in Beer Town USA. :)

Find the Bend Brew Bus driving around town stopping at your favorite places! (The beer/spirits/coffee branch of @wanderlusttours) . . . . #bendbrewbus #brewerytours #coffeetour #inbend #bendhistory #coffee #thebestofbend #beer #locallydistilledspirits #inbend

Our first stop of the day was Deschutes Brewery, which happens to brew one of my FAVORITE beers of all time, Inversion IPA. We had a full tour of the brewing facility which included an incredible behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to work for Deschutes. They take amazing care of their employees, and even have a special lounge and employee breakroom called Shifties where folks can go enjoy a pint after work. There's a special cooler where they can pour a beer into their personalized glass with their name or nickname on it! Some of the beers they have on tap are experimental and unavailable to the public. I thought that was pretty damn fantastic!

Their production facility was larger than life, and we learned a ton about the process start to finish. The equipment alone was mind-blowing, from the Mash and Lauter Tuns to the bottling process.

One of the most impressive components was learning about their professional beer tasters. The folks who have mastered this art have palettes so refined they can denote just about any minute flaw in a beer. They have a wheel with super complex details for identifying insanely-specific flavors and odors.

At the end of the tour, we got to hang out in their Tasting Room and sample 4 beers from their HUGE list of offerings. I tried an IPA that was brand new to me called the Sagefight Imperial IPA. That puppy was BOLD! Also, Jubelale is back for the season for those who love a winter warmer!

These five fabulous, flavorful beers are here for you to FALL in LOVE with this season... which ones have you tried so far?? #fallbeers #worthsharing #craftbeer #jubelale #hopzeit #sagefight #hoptrip #chasinfreshies #ipa #seasonal #snow #leaves #hops

This was just the FIRST stop in our afternoon of brewery exploration! More to come from my Visit Bend extravaganza.
