Vicky's Dirty N' Nerdy Blog: "Bad Ass TV Ladies"

July 6, 2017

Greetings My Fellow Nerds!

So yesterday, I will admit, I fell into the Netflix binge mode rabbit hole again.

Everyone, especially Steve, has been raving about the new Netflix show Glow!

Glow, or Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, is loosely based on the 80’s women's professional wrestling promotion of the same name.

So out of the 10 episodes that are currently out, I binged 8 of them. The only reason I stopped was because it was nearing 11pm and had to wake up in a few hours. To be fair, the episodes are only 30 minutes long so it was a quick watch.

I was really sucked in because of all the different women, their back stories, and personalities and how strong and powerful they are in their own way.

That got me thinking about how many awesome shows and movies that are coming out with strong female leads. I know some people like to complain about this (but that’s a conversation for another time) but when you see a little girl looking at a cosplayer or poster of her favorite female hero with stars in her eyes, you know that they’re on to a good thing.

That got my brain going about all the other shows I have binged with amazing female leads, and thought I would share them with you in case you’re in the need of a new show obsession.

Preacher – Tulip

Season two of Preacher just aired last week with two episodes for the price of one, and they jammed packed it with even more greatness. More blood, more fighting, and a faster pace than season one, and it only has 3 episodes out so far!

As bad-ass as Jesse Custard, AKA The Preacher, is, he can’t compare to his on and off girlfriend Tulip. She is not afraid to do what she has to do; if you scorn her, be prepared for some hurting, yet she in vulnerable. You know she’s been through some real pain which, despite her blowing things up nonchalantly, you can still relate to her.

Tulip's got great style for all occasions and seasons on #Preacher. Check out why she's my current TV style icon in this week's column. Link in the bio. #ruthnegga

Jessica Jones – Jessica

She’s moody, a drunk, has a tragic past, oh, and has super powers. Netflix has been really bringing it with their Marvel shows (with maybe the exception of Iron Fist) and Jessica Jones was fantastic!

We’ve all struggled with our own demons, we’ve pushed people away, and this show captures all that pain. It also shows how a great support system is necessary for survival, no matter how much you try to alienate them.

She will make her second appearance later this year in The Defenders and later again in the already announced season 2 of Jessica Jones.

Orphan Black – All The Seestras

Going on right now for it's 5th and finale season is Orphan Black. This show is literally jammed packed with amazing ladies, most of whom Tatiana Maslany plays. From the brilliant scientist Cosima, ruthless Sarah, crazy but bad ass Helena to even the surprisingly sneaky Allison, there is not a lady that doesn't radiate "bad-assery"!

Sense 8 – Noami, Sun, Kala, Riley

I was very upset when season two came out earlier this year, I spend most of my free time binging it, just to hear shortly after that they would not be getting a season three. I don't think I was ever devistated by a show cancellation like I was for this. Especially since, spoiler alert, they left it off with a HUGE cliffhanger! A war has offically started!

You can't blame them for the cancellation since each episode cost $9 million to make, however the outcry for this show did help land it a 2 hour wrap up episode that will air sometime next year.

I truely believe we need more shows showcasing how amazing, smart, strong, and unique women can be. From Sun who is both a bussiness woman and an underground kickboxer from Korea; the sweet and intelligent pharmacist Kala; the DJ with past pains, to the inspiring trans hacktivist and blogger Noami!

It doesn't matter that this show is ending, it's a must watch if you appericate diverse, strong ladies.
