Migs Blog: Suicide Squad

I absolutely think critics are the WORST.  They might…actually nope…they ARE the most self-absorbed group of holier-than-thou humans that just want to crap on things so that they seem "above" whatever they are reviewing.

I contend that you need to assign critics to specific genres… have an action movie critic that ACTUALLY likes action movies, a dumb comedy critic (I’m available for this one) that actually likes comedies, and an artsy-fartsy critic that actually likes…yup, you guessed it…artsy fartsy movies.  The problem is that it seems like the artsy fartsy critics are reviewing all movies…and this is ridiculous.

Why would I take the advice of seeing any movie from an artsy fartsy critic (and yes that is their official title)?  I’m positive that our tastes don’t align.  I would rather hear from a critic that I know likes the genre of movies that I like.  I don’t ask a vegan to tell me which steakhouse to go to after all.

Why I am on this tangent?  Suicide Squad.

This movie looks awesome, but the reviews for it have been predominantly bad so far.  That’s fine…I will eventually watch this regardless of the reviews, but we came across one review that made me roll my eyes to the back of my head…

Vanity Fair’s reviewer wrote: "It's ugly and boring, a toxic combination that means the film's highly fetishized violence doesn't even have the exciting tingle of the wicked or the taboo."

Highly fetishized? Exciting tingle?  Are we talking about an adult film or a comic book movie?  Congrats Vanity Fair for your high brow review…now go back to sipping on your tea and shut up.

The negative reviews have gotten back to the director, David Ayer…and he responded to the backlash on Twitter with a quote from Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata. “Prefiero morir de pie que vivir de rodillas,” This translates to: “I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees.”

I have a lot of love for what he did at the world premiere of the movie…he reminds me of Billy Walsh, the crazy director from the Entourage TV show….as he made headlines Monday night for shouting “F*** Marvel”. He apologized a few hours later, saying that he got “caught up in the moment.”

I do know one thing...the soundtrack for this movie is awesome...especially these 2 songs!
