Joey "Deez" Blog “Big Papi"

October 11, 2016

Last night was the final game of one of my favorite players in the MLB, David Ortiz, aka Big Papi. The Cleveland Indians managed to deal a final blow to The Boston Red Sox yesterday, eliminating them from the playoffs in a stunning 3-0 sweep. But more importantly it meant the last game for player who will have his number retired by the city of Boston. Although the loss was devastating, I was happy that Big Papi’s last game was at home. The energy at Fenway Park was still electric even after the game, as many fans stayed after to hear his last speech and pay their respects to player who embodied the very spirit of Boston.

I’ve been a Red Sox fan for as long as I can remember and the team has had a bunch of odd ball characters that you couldn’t help but fall in love with. Whether it was bushy beards or big bellies, epic chokes or amazing comebacks, the team always gave you a reason to watch. My dad and I have been going to Red Sox games for over a decade and they’ve become almost like a home away from home. I’ll never forget the look on my dad’s face as he tried to catch a home run ball hit by Ortiz, mostly because it went from excitement to panic real quick. Luckily the ball hit a light right above us, saving my dad’s wrists and my ears, because that is a story I’d never hear the end of. Big Papi will truly be missed!
