Rock Blog: Happy Birthday To The Lizard King

December 5, 2016

This Thursday would have been the 73rd birthday of Jim Morrison. He started the Doors in 1965 when he was 22 years old. He died at the age of 27 in Paris, and was one of the original four members in the tragic “27 Club” of great rockers who died at 27 years old. Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin were the other three. Jim Morrison was charisma personified, the ultimate front man, and the ultimate rock star. He was also one of the best anti-establishment men there ever was. He gave zero craps to what any authority figure had to say.

The Doors released six truly classic albums from 1967 to 1971’s awesome L.A. Woman, perhaps their best work. My favorite for sure. Sadly, the world lost Jim Morrison just three months after that album came out. Celebrating what would have The Lizard Kings birthday, here’s my pick of one great Doors song from each of those albums.

Whiskey Bar / The Doors

Moonlight Drive / Strange Days

Five to One / Waiting for the Sun

The Soft Parade / The Soft Parade

Peace Frog / Morrison Hotel

L.A. Woman / L.A. Woman
