Rock Blog: Rush's 'Fly By Night' Turns 42

February 15, 2017

It's crazy to think that an album that came out 10 years before I was even born has had such a profound impact on my life. It actually had a profound impact on the career direction of the Canadian power trio as well, as it was the first to feature drummer Neil Peart. Some would argue he's the greatest drummer of all time, and I am one of those people! Fly By Night was released 42 years ago today and truly set the stage for Rush ruling the world of progressive rock. In my opinion, they're still the kings of prog.

The opening track on Fly By Night sets the mood for the rest of the album. 'Anthem' is vicious musically, energized vocally, and just about as proggy as a song can get.

Neil Peart was exactly what the band had been missing with original drummer John Rutsey. Not only did The Professor instantly mesh with the musical vision of Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, he established himself as an insanely capable lyricist right out of the gate. No joke - he penned nearly every word of the entire album. Fly By Night launched Rush into the fantasy world they loved to create, featuring one of my favorite songs from The Holy Triumvirate, 'Bytor & The Snow Dog'.

Furthermore, the title track was a very personal song for Peart to write. In the lyrics to 'Fly By Night', he's referencing his first time leaving home, which we can all relate to. The good, the bad, and the ugly of truly being on your own for the first time. Apparently everyone "got" it, and we still do, because to date, it's the highest selling single of Rush's entire career. Can we get these haircuts back, guys?

Just over a year ago I went ahead an inked my first Rush tattoo - the 2112 star man - but I stated yesterday at lunch that the Fly By Night owl might have to be my next piece! Happy 42nd Anniversary to this hugely influential album.
