Vicky's Dirty N' Nerdy Blog: Comics to Read Pt. 1

February 23, 2017

Hello my fellow dirty and nerd folks!

Lately I’ve had this obsession with online shopping. I was given some gift cards over the holidays and even though I have used them all up, I’m still filling up my cart. I have a problem, I know.

Anywho, I have been expanding my graphic novel collection significantly, so I have some awesome books to read while I enjoy my instant noodles.

I do want to highlight a few trades that I have been reading for a while that are NSFW! This means, you won’t want to give this to your little ones to read after you’re done. I love these books as well because they feature some bad ass ladies, so whether you’re a dude or a chick, I can almost guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Hack/Slash
Written By Tim Seeley
Devil’s Due Publish/Image Comics

If you listen to BJ Shea’s Geek Nation, you probably know my feelings towards the horror genre. To put it simply, I am the biggest chicken! So it might surprise you to know that a series I very much enjoy chalk full of blood and guts!

Hack/Slash is a series that follows out hero, Cassie Hack and her “muscle”, the giant disfigured Vlad, on what basically a monster killing road trip. They hunt “Slashers” which are people who have died but have returned as monsters.

Cassie is a badass goth chick dealing with a lot of emotional issues. Who wouldn’t when you’re living in a world where you must go up against fearsome creatures, including a guest appearance from your favorite homicidal doll Chucky as well as some other recognizable horror icons.

The rotating cast of artists makes each story unique and visually appealing.

There was talk about a movie and TV series years ago but there is no new news on the subject.

Overall, the blood and gore (and possibly her amazingly (and badass) tiny outfits) is what makes this NSFW!

Saga
Written By Brian K. Vaughn
Image Comics

Is there anything Brian K. Vaughn does that isn’t a masterpiece?

The story starts by following the married couple Alana and Marko as they are on the run for their lives with their newborn baby. See, Alana comes from a race of winged creatures from Landfall Coalition while Marko is of from the race of horned being from Wreath, and let’s say, their races hate each other and have been at war for many, many years.

In a very “Romeo and Juliet” fashion, this two lovers from different worlds meet and runaway together. When Alana get’s pregnant, many powers out there, including their governments are on their tails to kill them all.

This story is occasionally narrated by their now grown daughter Hazel and depicts that even though this is a “love story”, it doesn’t shy away from showing now horrible beings can be to each other, and even to themselves in the name of coping with all the pain and chaos.

In a comic with graphic sex, blood, and sometimes heart wrenching story arcs; I found myself gasping aloud at least a few times, scaring the roommates. There is no shortage of twists, turns, and depictions of hard hitting topics here.

Rat Queens
Written By Kurtis J. Wiebe
Image Comics

What is better than drinking, fighting, sexy time, a medieval fantasy world and the occasional hallucinogenic? Not much, to be honest and that is why I fell in love with Rat Queens!

With a Dungeons and Dragons vibe, Rat Queens follows four bad ass babes as they ward off assassins and finding paid jobs defending towns and vanquishing evil!

On the team we have Hannah the elven mage, Violet dwarf warrior, Dee the human cleric, and the sweet and usually high Halfling thief named Betty!

Sex, drugs, and magic spells…I got some weird looks reading this in public but so worth it!

Those are just a few of the books I follow, I will hit you guys up with more next time.

If you have any suggestions or comments on these, hit me up!

Stay Nerdy!
